I've lived and worked in Jeju for eight months (hagwon).
Brief pros and cons as I see them...PM me with any specific questions, if you'd like to.
Pros:
Great beaches, Halla Mountain, caves, waterfalls, etc.
Everything's accessible within an hour
Tight-knit foreign community, if that's your sort of thing
Low pollution
Low cost of living
Casinos, if that's your sort of thing
Cheap flights and ferries to the mainland
Airline and attraction discounts by virtue of being a resident
Pro soccer team with a great stadium, although nobody goes
More seafood restaurants than you could shake a stick at
Very easy to buy a cheap and reliable car or motorcycle
Decent shopping, but sometimes hard to find 'foreign' sizes
Flawless mobile service
Racetrack with these wierd little horses...a must see
The local soju is excellent
Lots of young women, few young men...they're sent to Seoul
Cons:
Dialect quite different from 'standard' Korean
Tight-knit foreign community prone to a great deal of cliqueishness and gossip, at times
Some tourist areas quite tacky
Utter lack of foreign foods...one Indian restaurant, a couple of Italian,
a couple of Chinese, a couple of Japanese...that's it...and
expensive
Difficulty purchasing foreign foods at supermarkets
Public transport consists solely of crappy buses
Plenty of nightlife, but nothing innovative
Winter is boring
Few festivals, though the recent Fire Festival was pretty kick-ass
Golf excessively expensive due to tourism, if that's your thing
No skiing...general disinterest in sports on the part of locals
Absolutely no live music, places to dance, whatever
Few movie theaters or similar diversions
Many things you hear about are over-hyped or deluged by tourists |
