I have a new job starting in about a month in Jongno. I need to find housing but would like to live in a somewhat quiet area but still within a 20 min commute (either by walking/bus or train). As I currently live outside Seoul, can anyone recommend a nice area? I'm thinking I might stay for a while in the hostel/yeogwan area behind Insadong..

20 minutes from Jongo in any direction will still be in the city. I'm sure there are some quieter places than Jongno itself. You could head north on Line 4 and check out places near Bukhansan or Suraksan (Line 7), but that'll put you over 20 minutes.

The 143 bus from Jongno 3-ga to Haebongchon is only about 15 minutes in the mornings and there are plenty of affordable housing options there. Also, Hongdae, Sinchon and Edae should be worthy of consideration as a bus ride from there would range in the 25-30 minute range. The university areas are pricier though.
