|
|
Did anyone else see the Korean-American guy ham it up on "Deal or No Deal"? Pyong Kong certainly made the most of his opportunity being in the spotlight. He did an outstanding karaoke performance, dancing all over the stage and singing like a pro. He also did a clogging exhibition, and went along with a comedy karaoke routine with lyrics making fun of the stereotype of Asian males being dorky geeks...
Actually, his whole Korean-American family came across as very nice, and he had the whole crowd - including Howie Mandel - pulling for him maybe more than for any other contestant I've seen on that show...
Pyong's wife was attractive, and at one point they romantically embraced in a passionate kiss. His mother was a funny, friendly character who kept advising him to "be a man" by listening to his wife. His father came across as an amiable, reserved old Asian man...
Obviously when they auditioned him, they saw he was a good showman, and they scripted a lot of stuff for him to display his talent...
However, the way the game unfolded - and was promoted in their commercial - I suspect that scripting might have been involved there also.
Right from the start, they played up the fact that his parents - now elderly - came to America with just $750, and the "American Dream" angle was highlighted.. .
In the late stages of the game, most of the amounts left had the number 75 in it, and they kept mentioning the role of "fate" (in a nod to Buddhism?...)
Three of the last four amounts on the board were $75., $750. and $750,000. After turning down an offer of $293,000, he finally made a deal for $211,000.
Do you think it was just coincidence that the amount that he had selected at the start to be in his briefcase was the $750. that his parents had started out with?....
After writing this, I checked the Internet and others who saw this episode now think that it might be rigged, too, It's never been so obvious before, though, so maybe it all was just his "fate"...
It was more entertaining than usual, so I have no complaint in that regard, but fixing the actual game - if that's what happened - seems kind of fraudulent...

I was wondering if it was rigged, but actually, I don't care. I got suspicious the moment he took his briefcase.
He chose case #8 which is THE lucky number in Asia. Knowing this fact, If I were the Deal Or No Deal guys, I would have put something special in that case. Coincedence? There was $750 in the case, the supposed amount that his family came to America with.
I think that part could have been predicted by the show's staff. As for the $75 and $750,000 amounts left on the board, I am thinking they were pure coincedence. |

I think you're probably right, but it was an amazing coincidence. And, they really provided a showcase for Pyong Kong's amateur talents...
I wouldn't be shocked if NBC offered him his own show... Maybe since it's a major network, they're trying to balence all the negative images of Korean-Americans that have been in the media recently by featuring nicer personalities from that ethnic group... |

it's entertainment first, "game" second
it's not like it's a sport or as if there's any competition
but then again, I believe in coincidences when they don't involve politicians |
