So, what do you think?
You've read all the guide books, you know not to get involved in fights.
Then, you see a guy being kicked in by around 8 others in a shop doorway. All the other foreigners you've made friends with are watching and guffawing from a bar window overlooking.
You run out, wait for it to die down. Go over to the kicked in guy to see if he's still alive. Then your boyfriend is attacked and knocked ot the floor.
Then you are punched in the face and knocked to the floor too.
The police arrive, it turns in to the Benny Hill show 2007 and, the day after not one Korean you know gives a single solitary shit. They shrug their shoulders as if it is normal.
Am I mental?
Is it OK for women to be smacked in the face and attacked in the street?
I don't know anymore. People are attacked everywhere. in every city in every country - male or female - but generally there's some kind of digust - pointless or not.

I don't know

I think I missed something, and not meaning to seem unsympathetic ... but, this is job-related exactly how?

I don't know

(Why is this thread on Job-related?)

You have my sympathies.

As you'll learn before too long, this society actively discourages Good Samaritanism and I would even say has built-in cultural deterrents against it. In that situation, the smartest thing to do is contact the police and just hope they arrive before too much blood is shed. Though I've seen them drive right past street fights and not even pause to gawk. Still, it's better than placing your own physical & financial well-being at great risk by intervening in situations that can escalate so wildly and unpredictably, particularly if you're a foreigner. I'm convinced the old adage, "No good deed goes unpunished" was coined by early Western visitors to Korea.

What your boyfriend and you tried to do was commendable and natural, but regrettably, it wasn't very street-wise. Especially in terms of "the Korean street". When and where did this happen, and what was the specific outcome?

Well a woman should never be physically abused.......and yes this is not job related.......

However, as I have stated in the past (here is where the pacifists and "I'm afraid of blood money" folks come out) BEAT THE FARKING SNOT OUT OF ANY BA$TARD WHO HAS THE GAUL TO PHYSICALLY ASSAULT YOU!!!!!!

Any one with pride and coconuts would.

Over and Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"physically assault you"? I thought we were talking about the wisdom of breaking up fights between strangers, not attacks on one's own person. Confused

Anyway, yes, you can also wade into a melee between utter strangers to you, but you should do this only when you have a guaranteed, foolproof plan of escape from the scene (though who does in those situations?). If you don't, then understand the consequences you're liable to suffer: Getting attacked by the Korean mob that typically materialises in these situtations, physical injury to yourself and maybe to those with you from said Korean mob, getting held up for "blood money", possible prison time, loss of your job and deportation. But hey, you still have your cocoanuts.

Oh yes, and if the victim of the beating that you attempted to halt is the Korean girlfriend or wife of the abuser, understand that she probably won't be backing up your account of the events to the police or the judge.

Wasn't there a thread about a scam where a foreigner broke up a fight between a guy hitting a girl and the foreigner ended up getting sued?
