Hello. I am new to posting here but I need your advice. I worked in Korea for about a month and a half. I started feeling lonely and depressed and missing my woman back in the States so I pulled a nasty runner. I mean one Sunday night I got on Expedia.com and got the first ticket out of Korea, without giving my employer notice. Now that I think about it, It was a bad decision based purely on impulse. I want to come back to Korea and work for a different school. Can I do that without waiting for the 1 year E-2 visa to expire? I'm pretty sure that my old school will not give me a release letter since I basically screwed them. What are my options? Thank you. |

EFL Lowlife. Great to have you on board. Why don't you just drive down the industry a little more with your advertisement about your misdeed?
Read the old posts. Reflect within yourself. Or, most likely, you are just a drunken Sunday night troll. |

I am apologetic for what I did as a newbie. I just wanted to get some advice from the old timers here but unfortunately I ran into a scumbag such as yourself who can't possibly be polite. Thanks for the advice *beep* hole. |

You have come to the wrong place for sympathy.
It's that kind of behavior that makes it hard for the rest of us here. It sounds like it was more than a newbie mistake. A newbie mistake is playing Bingo everyday. Doing a runner after a month is a deeper problem, one you should probably address before returning.

I won't be bitter about this, ok?
I myself DID pull a runner once, but I was on a tourist visa awaiting my confirmation certificate at that time, so there was little to no consequence for what I did.
But for you, thats a whole other ballgame.
You will have to wait until the expiration date on your E2 before even think about coming back and even then they might be so upset about the predicament that they might try to write you a bad reference and put it in your work record, thus effectively blacklisting you.
But there is a bright side...the record gets expunged after your current E2 expires, so you might have to wait 11 more months before even thinking of coming back to Korea.
The best way to check on that is to have your new employer later apply for your visa before coming to Korea to see if you have been blacklisted.
Trust me, no woman is worth feeling depressed about, I of all people know about that.
Thats better than the Gulf states, where if a person gets fired in one of the gulf states, they are effectively barred from working anywhere in the gulf for up to 2 years. |

thanks, darko. should we broaden it to say "no man is worth feeling depressed about" or "no person is worth feeling depressed about" or are we going to keep this maxim limited to your sister, mother or daughter? |

Wow, defensive! I am pretty sure this isn't a slight (sp?) against women, just that the OP is a guy, so he wrote that. I am pretty sure if it would have been the other way around, he would have said the same thing. Relax. |

Sure, come on back. And bring some drugs, a STD or two, a fake degree, and a story about killing a little girl back in Colorado. You'll be doing us all a big favor. Thanks in advance. |

The best way for you to alleviate your guilt would be to repay the school for all of their expenses:plane ticket, recruiter fee, canceled classes.

Your probably going to get mostly negative reactions to your post. I've been is some pretty bad situations in Korea and haven't pulled a runner yet. Each time I've been able to eventually get out of the situation and find a better one.
In terms of your question, I'd guess you probably can't come back until your origional contract is up. I'm not sure when that is because you didn't state it in your post.
Another possiblity is to start over fresh in another country like Japan, China or Thailand.
Although I personally don't back those who posted negative comments, I will echo their sentiment that what you did reflects poorly among all of us that are working as foreign teachers here. That doesn't mean you can't redeem yourself and come back and be a good teacher. It just means you'll have an uphill battle. |
