Since we have 3 full weeks of class after testing but before the semester ends, i tried to come up with something fun and easy.
my idea is this. students only know a few genres of american music, that being pop, rap, and rock.
i figured i would research some of the other styles. during class, i will introduce other genres, along with their origins and characterisctics. then play a prominint song from the category.
so far, my categories are:
jazz, country, rap, blues, swing, reggae, grunge, classical, hip hop, pop, R&B, disco, techno, heavy metal, hard rock, soft rock, glam rock, and heartland rock. i will also define classic rock and oldies, since these seem to not be styles but more for radio stations.
My question; i cant tell the difference between hard rock and heavy metal. i have looked on the net, but not found much, most bands are listed in both categories. are they the same?
if anyone has other topics, please let me know. i will try to finish this lesson (with definitions, pictures, and songs and lyrics) soon. so if there is a demand i will pass on the file if you request it.
so again, what other genres are there?
what is the difference between hard rock and heavy metal?
thanks! |

I think hard rock is more general than heavy metal, with both referring to rock which would come after music labeled classic rock. It's like a split (fork in the road). If you look at http://www.last.fm/music/Heavy+Metal you will see ZZ Top and Boston are listed as heavy metal.
However, I would place them as hard rock instead. The reason why they are under heavy metal is probably due to the fact they are an older band than heavy metal bands which started out in the 80's. So, there are more people who, in my opinion, mislabeled them as heavy metal.
MTV would have a show called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headbangers_Ball on Saturday nights which would play videos you would never see during the day.
At http://www.mtv2.com/#series/10896 they have "hardest rock", so we could just look at it in terms of being a superlative. Classic rock was rock our parents (if you are in your 30's) would like, hard rock was rock they might allow on the car radio during long trips because it reminded them of classic rock and kept us kids quiet, but heavy metal was the worst rock that no parent would want blaring out their child's room window. This made it all the cooler and a status of being a real rocker in the guitar world.
To add to this, alternative music was also around during this time. Bands like The Cure would wear makeup and dress their hair very differently. Heavy metal bands presented a similar appearance but in a more straightforward rock fashion. The hard rockers had to look and compete with the pop stars, so they didn't try to look as obnoxious. |

| Just curious, what songs are you planning to use for the prominent songs for each category? |

he he he, these are MY notes, meaning what i have gathered, of course before i give them to my middle school students, i will format a worksheet and change all the language.
i still need to find the pics, music, make the worksheet, and determine appropriate language.
my students vary, of course, some i will use almost all of that, but explain things like dynamics, tempo, lyrics.... other classes i will be using VERY basic info (fast song. use drum, guitar, funny hair. now look at the pic.) |
