|
|
I am looking at 2 areas based on cost of living: Tulsa and Oklahoma. Was looking at some condos in areas of Houston: Alief and Belaire that I could buy right now and some of these are in gated communities with club houses etc. Tulsa is a little bit more expensive, but I could buy one of those in a years time. In Tulsa they are near Oral Robert's University.
I know there is humidity and tornados, but every area seems to have something; hurricanes, long cold winters, earthquakes etc.
I also know that Houston is not zoned and as the 4th largest city in the US has a lot of crime.
Both places has a lot of immigrants, not a bad thing for an English teacher. They also have Universities and Community Colleges, again not a bad thing.
For both places I get a lot of mixed views from my internet reading. I am asking if anyone on this board has any expereince in either place and can share with me
Thank you |

Houston:
pro - Lots to do (sports teams, gulf, nightlife)
Low housing costs
Hub for national/international travel
con - High crime, getting higher (New Orleans refugees)
Flood risk, hurricanes
Tulsa:
pro - Growing city, lots of new construction
Low crime
Affordable housing
con - Limited nightlife, kind of boring
It's in the middle of nowhere
Expensive flights in/out
Ever considered Austin? Far superior to either Houston or Tulsa, IMO. |

Dear Lord, please don't let this man move to Houston or Tulsa if he's never been there. Amen
Seriously, Houston and Tulsa are POS cities. There's a reason the cost of living is low: No one wants to live there. Houston has surprisingly little to do for fun in relation to its size. Tulsa has even less to do.
As far at Texas goes, Austin is one of the only cities I would consider living in, and is with a gun forced to my head and a cowboy demanding I live in Texas. |

I grew up in Tulsa.. and well over the years it is definitely growing.. but a lot depends on what you want the condo for? if you want low cost then ok you got it.. but when they finally get all the construction done on the 2025 project and they market it right it could be a nice place. OKC is also good especially around the Norman area.. it grows every year especially with the OU campus being there. I can't speak much for Austin... Nightlife anywhere is what you make of it in my opinion... There are lots of lakes you can enjoy if that is your thing as well.. so just depends on what you want with your condo... |

Been to Houston, haven't been to Tulsa. You really need to travel there to see if it's right for you. I liked Houston compared to Southern Texas since it has trees. There was also wind there which was nice after experiencing the windless desert heat in the South. |

seeing as how I grew up in Houston,
I'm going to say...look for a condo around Montrose, Westheimer, or Voss (streets) .
(Why were you looking at Belaire? Although I would choose Belaire over Alief anyday...)
I think there's plenty to do in Houston.
I don't really know anything about Tulsa...but PM me if there's anything specific that you want to know... |

Have you considered Oklahoma City? Smaller than Houston, bigger than Tulsa, seems like a nice place to live. |
Have you been to OKC? Seems like a nice place to live? I can't believe more people aren't speaking up against Houston, Tulsa and now, OKC. Having traveled most of the USA, these 3 cities are near the bottom of my list in places to live. Despite mediocre to shiaty nightlife, you must deal with rednecks, Republicans (and not the fine, Libertarian types, butthe Bush supporting, anti-evolution types), flat land, hot, humid weather, over-zealous police officers and being land-locked (excect for Houston to some extent). If your life consists of seeing the occasional live performance, raising a family in a crappy environment, staying indoors because the ecosystem sucks and buying a home because the housing costs are low due to the fact no one wans to live the area, then Houston, Tulsa and OKC are right for you. If want to live in the south and at least be around free-thinking individuals, go to Austin, but it's still flat. |

haven't lived in either myself, but i have two girlfriends living in each. the one in tulsa says - boring as hell, uninteresting landscape, lack of variety, and the only thing she got excited to do was go to sonic for a burger. the one in houston says - boring as hell, ignorant as hell, each language "group" tends to stick together and not mix, suspicion abounds, huge city of concrete wasteland and assorted sprawl, no one walks, everyone drives (and poorly), hot, humid, hurricanes.
in both instances, neither of my girlfriends are happy and they are both genuinely happy people that can be happy anywhere.
if you are looking into midwest, it hard to find good spots as the area is changing so much. look for somewhere where the city is up and coming after a downspell, which many have been experiencing now for a while. what's the industry like there? i would like to enter st. louis as a possiblity...i have heard that st. louis is coming back up again and the housing is still cheap, even for the funky older homes that have been in disrepair for a while. i agree with one of the previous posters...if you can afford it, go with austin. austin's value isn't going anywhere for a while. its the most likeable area in that part of the country and is known for this.
but if i had to chose between tulsa and houston, i might just chose tulsa. chose tulsa, and invest a ton of money into local businesses and get really involved in the community and hope and pray that the economy improves. houston already sounds like its chosen its path for the next couple of years. |

It is nice to see another "Okie" in Korea. I thought most "Okie's" stayed close to home and didn't move to far away from Oklahoma. I grow up just south of Tulsa, around Henryetta. |
