If you've read So Far From the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins, the ostensibly true account of a Japanese family fleeing Korean brutality at the end of the Pacific war, what did you think of its character depictions? Do you feel it is deserving of inclusion in an EFL curriculum?
Last night, Korean news ran a 8 minute segment on this YAL non-fiction work, which is stirring up controversy in the wake of PM Shinzo Abe's inflammatory public statements in Tokyo.
If so, would you pair it with When My Name Was Keoko, by Linda Sue Park, a nonfictional account of Japanese colonial rule in Korea during the Pacific War AND/OR with Year of Impossible Goodbyes by Sook Nyul Choi, of roughly the same genre?
