I will be travelling throughout SE Asia. Anyone heard of Air Asia?
How much are the flights? For example, from Bangkok to Vietnam.
Is it easy to get seats on Air Asia or should I make reservations?

Yes, Air Asia is piss cheap. They sometimes have promotions and give seats away. You can book on internet.
Not sure whether they have a route to Vietnam. I know you can fly to Phnom Phenh for about 30k. You can then get a bus to Saigon which is a pleasant few hours drive through the Cambodian countryside.
If you want to go to Vietnam direct, Vietnam Airlines is your best bet. I was in Vietnam last year and if my memory serves me correct, it was about 160USD from Saigon to BKK

Check their routes. EDIT - just looked, they fly to Hanoi. |

Air asia is dirt cheap. I have flown them around Thailand and throught SE asia. No reservations, just log on and buy the tickets online.
The international service is pretty good. The domestic service inside Thailand is pretty bad. I have had to wait 4, 6, even 8 hours for a flight within Thailand. I think they put a priority on the international and just delay the Thai domestic until whenever they can get a plane. |

Book in advance on the internet.
http://www.airasia.com/ will you give an idea of prices.
http://tigerairways.com/home/ and http://www.jetstar.com/au/index.html are two other similar airlines you might want to check out. |

I flew Hanoi-Bangkok last year and it was cheap and okay.
The further in advance you book on their website the cheaper it is.
I prefer Tiger Airways to Air Asia |

The Air Asia deal looks pretty good to me, but they're limited in their destinations.
If you wanted to go to Vietnam, Hanoi is the only city they go to - No flights to HCMC. |

Yes, airasia is cheap. I've flown with them a few times. No assigned seats, so it's a mad rush to the plane. They don't serve food, either. Make sure you book a few days in advance, because the longer you wait, the more expensive it is. And both times I flew with them the landing was less than stellar. I think they may have gotten the wheels down at the last minute. |

But you can't fly out of Seoul with Air Asia, can you? I didn't see any listings from or to Seoul with them. |

Yes, AirAsia's fares are that cheap. I've flown them a couple of times: Siem Reap - Kuala Lumpur in June 06, and KL - Chiang Mai - KL in Feb 07. They're fine. Pleasant, professional flight attendants who seem to like their jobs. Good service. We were a bit delayed getting out of Chiang Mai because of Thai military exercises in the area, so when we landed in KL, one of the FAs personally escorted a couple who were travelling onward to Bali through customs and immigration. I was impressed. Will fly them again next time I'm in SE Asia, if they serve a route I want to travel.
No service to Korea yet, but it's in the works. There are plans to set up a long haul subsidiary, AirAsia X. Once they can source planes, Korea's on the radar. Busan and Cheongju (of all places), plus one other unnamed city here, were cited as targets for service to KL. There will also be destinations in China, Australia, Europe, India, and the Middle East.
AirAsia has also diversified into hotels. Their hotel subsidiary is Tune Hotel. The first one is open in KL; others are planned for Malaysia's major cities. I haven't stayed at one yet, but they probably are more than adequate for a short break. |
