Does anyone know any inexpensive hotels or hostels convenient to the South Korean Consulate? Nowadays it is necessary to wait a day for the visa to be processed. Also do they require photographs and if so, what size and how many?

Thanks.

Quick answer to your question.
Yes, it is an overnight trip and No it cannot be done on a weekend or holiday. It takes 2 working days. The hotel across the street is 100k won and the CAPSULE hotel place around the corner is 35k won.

If you're looking for a cheap place and don't want to stay in a capsule, I recommend the "Business Hotel Chuo New Annex." See link below. It's in a seedier part of Osaka, but still very safe compared to any major city in the States. It's only 2 subway stops from the Korean consulate (5 minutes), and the hotel is literally in front of the subway entrance. The room costs between $20-25 US Dollars depending on whether you get a western-style bed or choose to sleep on the floor in traditional Japanese style. The place has kind of a hostel feel, but you get your own secure small room with a tv/vcr. It's shared bathrooms at the end of the hall. There is no curfew at this hotel, which is something you always want to check on if you are planning on staying out late in Osaka. There are several very cheap hotels in this neighborhood, although this one looked the best in my estimation. If you're only in Osaka for one or two nights, and you are on a budget, I think this place can't be beat.
