I got my E-2 visa approval paper today. I go to Japan tomorrow, and start work next Monday. They are paying for my new apartment, so everything will be OK.

But it's only for 6 months.

(read what I posted below).

Hey, immigration would only give me a 6-month visa.

What is the point of that!??!

I think it was a total power-play. When we asked him why, he just looked at me angrily and said, "You worked illegally -- Visa only 6 months!"

Anyway, my recruiter just said that I can renew it again after six months with no flight to Japan needed, as long as it is the same school. Is this true? I've never heard of that.

Actually, this may be a blessing in disguise if there were some problems at the school after 6 months, right?

If you renew a contract with the same school then you don't need to do a visa run. If you change schools then you'll have to.

What holyjoe said. Out-of-country visa runs are only necessary if you're changing employers.

Evidence to the contrary here chaps.

A colleague up in "Sunny" Daerim renewed and had to go Osaka, saw him leave, saw him come back. Confused

Any officialdom on it?

If your former employer, new employer, & immigration are all willing, its quite possible to change jobs without a run. Thats my experience.

That's odd, squid.

I renewed twice with the hagwon (for three years total) I taught at way back when, and renewed once (for two years total) with the uni I have been at until they bum-stabbed me this month, and never had to leave the country for a visa to re-sign at the same place.

Anyone got the official story on why sometimes yes/sometimes no?

(Edit : resign /= re-sign)

Story I got was rules relaxed a bit a couple years ago & some immigration officers still arent up to speed. I deal with a newer branch with younger officials.

When I switched jobs, I went in with my letter of release & the contract for the new job. They did a bit of phoning around to confirm my documents. I filled in a form, paid the fee, got a notation added to my ARC, & that was it.

That's a punishment?!
Sign me up for some of that sort of spanking right now.

Well, if you mean the disguise is a "get out of jail free" card, yes it is.

if you get involved in a mutual love affair, you and the wonjonim, you can easily extend it after that six months. if not you are a free man! one year contracts are tooooooooo loooooooong

I just found out today that the two schools that created such problems for me are BOTH CLOSING! Rumor from staff has it that, the first, (Accent Clinic in Apkujeong) is closing on the 15th, and the second (Discovery School near Ichon station) is closing in a month.

I saw my new school today, and i'm excited, because it looks great!

I thought all these schools were closing because of my teaching! I managed to *beep* up my first hogwon last year, really targetted all the bad little brats until they left. Then, only the good kids remained, which left about 3. Then hogwon number 1 closed. This year I've sabotaged my new unsuspecting hogwon- numbers are now down about half from when I arrived. 2 more kids down last week, things are going well. Classes of 1 are so eeeaasssy!!!! yippeeee!!!
