Can anybody recommend a good storybook to read with a class of fourth graders in public school. My co-teachers would like me to read a story book with the kids and although I do have some ideas I'd like some advice from people who've already been there and done that. Thanks!

While I haven't been in your situation, I would like to ask a few questions.

- What kinds of things are your students interested in?
- Are the students expected to read or are you and your co-teacher reading to them?
- Have been restricted in what you are allowed to assign or read to your students? If you have, what are the restrictions?

Not sure how advanced this title is, but here is my suggestion:
- The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Something short and humorous. You are reading in a foreign language so the kids interest will die very quickly. Actually it does no matter what language you use!
Most 4th grade kids have very little L2 ability, and listening is the hardest skill as well, so plenty of pictures will help.
I like Dr Suess books but the ones with made up words are just a source of confusion for language students. They have no way of knowing that the word is made up, and if the y look them up in the dictionary it just gets more confusing and frustrating and demoralising.....
So can I suggest as a starter,"Horton hatches the egg" and "The Cat in the Hat" series.

Cheers
James

Is this supplemental material for reinforcement in the regular classes or additional material for use in the afternoon program?
