|
|
I'll be in Fukuoka for the weekend. I've never been there.. never been to Japan, for that matter. I've been researching and feel overwhelmed with all there seems to be to see and do in/around Fukuoka! I'll be staying in Hakata (Canal Park).
Does anyone have any "must-see" advice for a 3 1/2-day trip to Fukuoka?! Any input would be great! I'd like to keep it semi-inexpensive if at all possible. Getting outside and hiking around would be nice... see some "scenery" perhaps?!
Thanks for your input in advance! |

Lots to see and do in Fukuoka? I guess there are some fun spots to hang out and such interesting spots like Ohori-koen, but I wouldn't say there's lots to see and do there. If you really want to do some cool sightseeing, get a railpass and do the Kyushu circuit -- Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and maybe stop off in Beppu for a hot dirt bath.

If you want hiking and scenery, go to the Aso National Park. It's a few hours south of Fukuoka. It's basically a huge volcanic zone with several volcanic peaks and lots of hiking trails and saunas. |

-2 cool day trips...
1.nagasaki - 4 hours return on the bus...go to the bomb site museum. About 60 000 won return. wetn there in 2002
2. Kumomoto - one of the coolest castles in japan. Only about 90 minutes away. About 40 000 won return at the most...been in there twice once in 2002 and in Oct 2006
In and around Fukuoka (to be honest though Fukuoka is a little boring but if it is your first time in japan you should be fine)
-The big ferris wheel is cool
-Go to Odori park
-Tenjin is pretty funky
If you are feeling up for a bit of a trip and have some dosh Hiroshima(been 3 times in 2000, 2005 and 2006) is only 75 mins away by bullet train and about 180 000 return. Go to the bomb site and Miyajima(the floating torii) |

I was just in fukuoka. We didn't do any sightseeing, b/c we were passing through on our way to Kyoto. For food, tehre is a Wendy's in Canal City. If you are american, a frosty goes a long way towards making you happy. ALso, there is a buffet downstairs in Canal City. Its quite good and the lunch menu is fairly cheap (maybe 1200yen for 90 minutes). So, if you eat a late lunch tehre, you probably won't need dinner. Thats my advice for waht to do in Fukuoka. |

I was just in Fukuoka not too along ago and had a great time there. I'm really tired and my memory is a little fuzzy right now but Canal City is a pretty good area to be located. My favorite place to eat was definitely the Raman place at the top of Canal City. About 15-20 different restaurants serving freshly made raman...it was killer and easily the best I've ever had.
Right next to Canal City is the businessman/adult entertainment area. You should take a walk through it late at night just to witness one of the bigger entertainment districts in Japan. I'd never seen so many rich drunk grandfathers walking around with teenage porno girls in my life.
The shopping/entertainment area Tenjin is cool and a god place to start if you want to check out some hip nightlife.
There's a nice shinto temple and some preserved housing from the 19th century and such. Just go to the tourist information center in Tenjin, they're awesome. I think most tourist sites are closed either Monday or Tuesday.
If you're into live music, there's an amazing indie/underground club in Fukuoka. They have shows everynight. |

Thankya!!....to everyone providing worthwile information regarding a quick trip to Fukuoka! ..ah.. yeah that google link came in helpful too?!
since i'm leaving in a couple days and dont' have much time to research (classes, preparing for classes, grading papers, etc.) it's awesome to hear from people first-hand..
i can usually find the most miniscule of things - somewhat entertaining! guess that's a benefit of being a small-town gal
i'm pumped for my trip - thanks again!!

I am going to Fukoka in a few weeks myself. I am not sure where to stay at. Someone mentioned the Clio Hotel. It costs about 112 bucks. Is there anything cheaper than that? Are there English teachers in Fukoka that one could meet up with? Are there any good sites (websites) to know what to do there? Do a lot of people speak English?
Thanks |

Adventurer check out the link I put above. Hotels need not cost over 5000 yen.
Example:
Accord Hotel Hakata <5,000 092-434-1850
Hakata JBB Hotel Hakata <5,000 092-263-8300
Hotel Etos Inn Hakata Hakata <5,000 092-642-4563
Hotel New Simple Hakata <5,000 092-411-4311
Sauna & Capsule Hotel Espa Hakata <5,000 092-451-1137
Sky Court Hakata Youth Guest House Hakata <5,000 092-262-4400
Sun Business Hotel Hakata <5,000 092-411-1155
http://www.fukuoka-now.com/hotels/index.php
In Japan, at the airport, just give them the hotel name and number.
I stayed at New Simple once. Small room, ala Japan, but clean and quiet. I liked it. Near Hakata station. In the area across the road from the Starbucks there are a few inexpensive hotels. Just walk around a bit.
Very little English spoken in Japan, from what I gather. Some people coming from there have commented on this, and said what a relief it was to have some English in Seoul.
Fukuoka is a great city though. |
