|
This is from the same International Herald Tribune article that I started this thread with.
Quote: |
The couple's courtship followed a common course among members of their generation. They were set up by a mutual friend who, according to custom, will now be presented with a suit, or the equivalent, in gratitude.
Their first date was at an Italian restaurant in Kangnam, a fashionable district in southern Seoul, and Kim later impressed her by going to pick her up at the airport at 2 a.m. after a business trip. Like many men here, he proposed on their 100-day anniversary.
The young couple will live with the bridegroom's parents for the time being. But his parents have already bought an apartment for their son and his future wife. "We're three brothers in my family," Kim said. "So my parents bought each son an apartment years ago for their future marriages."
|
It's common here to propose marriage 100 days after a blind date?
Maybe someone with imagination should make a movie called "How to Lose a Guy in 99 Days." |

My sister-in-law agreed to a proposal in the first month after a blind date. Sure the guy's rich, but I'm still expecting something bad to happen soon. |

My co-worker did after only 10 dates. And they are happily married with 3 kids now. Nice guy and nice girl.
When you know, you know. No need to date for years.... |

I think the age of the people is important. Many women are pumped to get married at a certain age, and as long as the guy is educated and from a good family, love doesn't really enter the equation. |

Don't forget this is the year of the Fire Pig that only happens once every 60 years. It won't surprise me if there's a record number of births and marriages this year. |

Golden pig, actually.
This year is lucky for children. Last year was lucky for weddings.

# 18 February 2007 - 6 February 2008: Fire Pig
I've heard "golden pig" too. A Korean guy told me, then when I looked it up on Wiki, it said fire pig.
Yeah, wikipedia isn't a great source, but I've read a couple other places that say its "fire pig" as well. |

Yeah, I don't think it's uncommon in Korea that people get married rather quickly after meeting. |

No crap. Whatever happened to getting to know the other person. No wonder there is a lot of domestic violence. The couples never get to know each other well enough to see those things coming. |

I think it's a combination of the societal pressures of age, and just wanting to get the hell out of their parents' house.
I think it sucks that there are entire generations of Koreans who will never know what it's like to truly live independently. They go from the bonds of a parental environment straight into the bonds of marriage...both of which can be wonderful, mind you. I just think that it severely hinders social growth when you move from one right into the other without a bit of independent self-discovery. |

Hopefully it will work out for them. Who knows, maybe they both found the one for them.
The right person is out there for everybody I think. Maybe the right person is out there for me |
