I'm returning to the states soon and trying to sort everything here.
I need to get a letter of rec from my principal soon. The problem is that they don't do these in Korea, so he has no idea what to write. I'm going to give him a couple of samples, but I was hoping soemone had come across some instructions IN KOREAN about writing rec. letters. It's a long shot, I know, but I'm trying to reduce the amount of work my coteacher has to do translating, going back and forth, blah blah on this. Thanks!

My hagwon director just said, "Write whatever you want, I will sign it." I bet a principal/VP Coteacher would do the same. They don't seem to attach the same level of importance as we do on these. Also, they probably would feel intimidated by having to write it in English.

Best thing to do would get someone with basic English skills that wouldn't mind answering a phone/email inquiry for you at a future date.

First hogwon I wrote it myself and they signed it. But then the next employer didn't even bother reading it.

Add in the fact that these schools do not use official paper, ever! Your ref. always looks like anyone could've handwritten it.

Nowadays i just quote the phone number of the school or supervisor.

Oh, I know...this pissed me off to no end. I ran into issues when I was gathering letters, from my former schools, to have my teaching experience evaluated for salary purposes. This was for my upcoming HK public school job.

I had a sample letter that showed the exact specifications the letter needed. I.e. official letter head, whether the contract was full-time or part-time etc. The international school I worked for in China wrote up the letter perfectly. My hogwan (ECC) in Korea was a different matter. I sent them an attached document showing what the letter needed to look like. Instead, they sent me a bare bones letter 'this person worked at this company'. No letterhead. Just a stamp. It looked like I could have made it myself using MS Word. Boy, was I pissed. I would have been one point further up on the salary scale had ECC written me a proper letter. Since I knew I wouldn't be using my hogwan experience anymore for references, I wrote a polite (but somewhat frosty) email to the academic supervisor about how they needed to get with the times and start to conform to international standards of business, etc.

P.S. I also recently submitted some docs to a Canadian dept. of education to have my experience evaluated for salary purposes. I decided to submit the crappy Korean letter anyway. Well, they did end up giving me half value for the year I worked there. So, it wasn't a complete waste.
