Foreigner dies as doctors stage protest
An immigrant worker died Wednesday because doctors from across the country were staging a protest in Seoul. His wife told police that he seems to have choked on a piece of chicken bone. Police are investigating the exact cause of his death.

He was the first known casualty of the nationwide strike against a revision of the medical law.

An acquaintance said that delay of an ambulance car worsened the situation. "We called the emergency service team at a nearby fire station to send us an ambulance, but it did not arrive 10 minutes after the call, so we had to move the patient ourselves," said pastor Ahn Dae-hwan of the Gwangju Migrant Workers Center.

Reminds me of when Ontario doctors went on strike over extra billing. Not a good time to be unhealthy.

Perhaps, it is foreigners that do not register as humans to some Koreans.

What are they striking for THIS time?

They went on strike in the summer of '00 for about 6 weeks. I had to delay my surgery at that time. Not comfortable.

Thanks for proving the point yet again RR.

Why should anyone respect you when you clearly do not have the basic decency to recognize Koreans as human or worthy of your respect?

Your link post fest is old now....it is also tired and reeks of a bitter person in a very, very dark room somewhere.

I've actually seen studies that showed death rates dropped when doctors went on strike.

One such example:

http://www.chiropracticresearch.org/NEWSdeath_rate_drops_during_doctor_s.htm
Quote:
Death Rate Drops During Doctor Strike

The June 10, 2000 issue of the British Medical journal reports on an interesting statistic that has occurred in Israel. It seems that three months ago physicians in public hospitals implemented a program of sanctions in response to a labor dispute over a contract proposal by the government. The article stated that the Israel Medical Association began an action in March to protest against the treasury's proposed imposition of a new four year wage contract for doctors. Since then, the medical doctors have cancelled hundreds of thousands of visits to outpatient clinics and have postponed tens of thousands of elective operations.

To find out whether the industrial action was affecting deaths in the country, the Jerusalem Post interviewed non-profit making Jewish burial societies, which perform funerals for the vast majority of Israelis. Hananya Shahor, the veteran director of Jerusalem's Kehilat Yerushalayim burial society said, "The number of funerals we have performed has fallen drastically." Meir Adler, manager of the Shamgar Funeral Parlour, which buries most other residents of Jerusalem, declared with much more certainty: "There definitely is a connection between the doctors sanctions and fewer deaths. We saw the same thing in 1983 when the Israel Medical Association applied sanctions for four and a half months."

Why Death Rates Decrease When Doctors Go On Strike

By Dr. Joseph Mercola
with Rachael Droege

A major paper by Australian researchers asks a question that should never have needed to be asked: Will more doctors increase or decrease death rates?

But sadly, with the state of health care as it is, this is a very legitimate, even necessary, inquiry.

The report, "Will More Doctors Increase or Decrease Death Rates?", conducted by the Center for Health Program Evaluation in Australia, refers to Australian statistics but I believe the information is relevant to America and other countries as well. The hypothesis? An increase in the doctor supply is associated with an increase in death rates. Read on to find out several potential reasons why this hypothesis may in fact be true.

Homer, please start your own thread about the Koreans that died during doctors' protest? Here I will provide you with some links to stories in the English edition of the Korean newspapers.

Over 70,000 Doctors Close Clinics for Protest
More than 70,000 doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff gathered in front of the government complex in Kwachon, Kyonggi Province, yesterday to protest against proposed changes to the country's Medical Service Law. The mass demonstration resulted in staff shortages in hospitals around the country, causing severe disruption for patients.

The ministry setup an emergency hotline, 1339, where patients could call and receive information about hospitals and medical institutes that are not participating in the demonstrations.

I don't think the drop would stay down for long. And doctor strikes don't last long. Doctor strikes usually just effect surgery that can be delayed. People do die due to complications. So those would be removed from death rates.

Well yeah, I believe it's actually a short term statistical anomaly. But the second study I cited does show that there could be an effect from excessive medical attention. Over medication is probably just as dangerous as under medication.
