I found a position in Kangnam at a children's house to be an English teacher, teaching only two hours a day. Did the usual thing by going to the school with the recruiter. His name is JC and he works with Yun English, which is a part of Good Master Recruiters. Anyone know of this company by chance? Or the recruiter for any matter? He tells me that he has been a recruiter for two years already.
He has decent English, better than the majority I have dealt with in the past. I met the director and things were the usual, he reads my resume, asks me a few questions, and says that I'm hired. But, there's no contract with him. After the meeting, I am told to wait outside while the owner and the recruiter talk with each other. They come out, I'm told to start tomorrow. The recruiter and I talk outside. He then pulls out a SINGLE PIECE of paper, stating that this PIECE of paper is the contract.
I'm already puzzled. I asked him if this is one with him or the school. It's his. Then I ask him if I would be required to sign one with the school later. he says no, the school asked him to make a contract and have me sign it. The paper had some of the importants, such as the pay with the date of payment, the specific working hours and days, something about staying at the school for at least six months (I'm only going to be here until August, and I have let the owner know), and the usual about not teaching outside of the school without their permission.
But nowhere did it speak about taxes, pension, and medical. Here's the kicker. I asked him, who is going to pay the taxes? He said that we won't be paying taxes. The school will pay him and he will pay us either cash or transfer. I told him cash is illegal and he just smiled. And then he proceeded to tell me that in all his two years or so as a recruiter, he never paid taxes. So I tell him well someone is going to have to or I'm going to take this information to the tax office. He smiles and nods.
I gave the contract back to him stating that I won't sign anything that is too broad. I told him that I want to speak with the foreign teachers who are already there and the owner, to see what type of contracts they really have.
I'm wondering if it would be out of the box to show up with my own contract. One that is similar to one of the ones here, except with all the information changed. Because to me, this one little piece of paper doesn't seem to cut it.
Thanks for all the responses in advance. ^^ |

Now that is wild. I wouldn't have signed either. Good job not falling for that one! |

Had you agreed to that you would have been (unless you are F2, F4, F5, Korean citizen) been working illegally.
There are NO recruiters in Korea who are licenced to hire foreign teachers.
They are only licenced to introduce teachers to schools and to act as an agent for said school during the hiring process. |

Why would the school be paying him instead of you? Will the recruiter be keeping a portion of your pay for himself?

Recruiters will say anything, that doesn't mean that what they say is necessarily true.
You may want to think twice about this school. If your illegal then what motivation would they have to pay you and stick to whatever contract you develop? |

Well, I am on a F4 visa. From there I know that I am not breaking any laws. Yeah, I found it quite odd when he mentioned that he would be paying me and not the school.
I plan on showing up for work tomorrow early to get a chance to speak with the director there without the recruiter. But I did see one foreign teacher there and was told that there are three in total and am hoping to get a chance to speak with them also.
Thanks again ^^. |

I know nothing about F-4's, F-4's or the like, but IMHO it sounds like a load of shyte. Trouble is, some poor bastard will probably take him up on it... |

If they are pulling this stuff now, they will continue to be shady later on, even if you get them to sign a real contract. Just look for another job. |
