I want to visit Fukuoka this weekend, just for a quick holiday. Here's the thing my E-2 visit expires Thursday. However, my boss said she called immigration and I am okay through May 2nd (which is when my alien ID expires), so my question is will I have any difficultly getting out of Korea and into Japan and back again since there has been no new notation to my passport?

Thanks in advance if anyone can be of assistance.

You will be fine until May 2.
Make sure you have a re-entry permit, or a multiple re-entry permit.

Couldn't the OP just leave Korea, and come back in on a tourist visa (this would of course mean that it is illegal for you to work)?

Where do I get a reentry permit? Do I get that in advance or at the border. I have exited and entered the country before on a trip to AUS. Thanks for your help

Did you have a reentry permit when you went to OZ? You should have if you entered and exited on the same visa.
Open your passport and look at your actual visa. Does it have an M (Multiple) or an S (Single) on it? If it has an M, you already have a reentry visa. If it has an S, you need to buy a reentry permit at immigration. You can do this at the airport or you can go to immi ahead of time and get it. (I suggest going ahead of time. You don't want to miss your plane b/c you were waiting in line).

Thanks for all of your help. I checked and I have an M for entries, but I just wanted to double check that I should then have no problems even though the visa in my passport will be expired by a few days, but me alien ID card is good through may. (again, my boss called them and said that its all good, but there is mention of it on my actual passport)

thanks again.

If your visa expires before the day you plan to re-enter Korea.....the re-entry permit expires at the same time.

If you did not get a new re-entry permit (stamped seperately in your passport) you will need to get one. Your ARC doesn't provide re-entry; your passport does.

If you're taking the ferry/Beatle, go to immigration (next to the terminal) and get one before you go (single or multiple).

If you're flying, you can do it at the airport (single).

If you don't, they will take your ARC and stamp a tourist visa in your passport and you won't be able to teach without starting the whole E-2 from scratch....contract, imm. #, visa run.

How did you get this information? It's well known that the date on your ARC is the date that your VISA expires, even though there is a different date in your passport.

There is quite often a communication problem when the "boss" is checking something for you with immigration (not to mention problem of getting a straight answer from imm).

Are you sure that imm. didn't that it was o.k. to teach "through May 2nd"? Then yes, it's true that the ARC will carry you over.

However, if you look at the visa in your passport, it says "Good for single/multiple journey to the Republic of Korea within 12 months of date here-of if passport remains valid".

The ARC is for residing/working in Korea; not re-entry.
