Hey, football fans (or soccer if you prefer) I got in a minor arguement to night with some canadian couple tonight about David Beckham. Now, I have read numerous articles discussing Beck's new contract. I was told he was making over 1 million dollars a week for LA ect... as a point basically to say American footbal, and American sport in general, are crap. You can make your own opinion on that, its really here nor there on what I am asking, just background. Anyway, I was basically told I was an idiot for telling this couple that David Beckham is never in a million years going to see a million a week from this deal. It was one of these deals where, I, being an American, could never understand such a thing as David Beckham's stardom. So I am asking the footballing community for some input. Everything I have read his base salary is really somewhere between 5.5 and 10.5 mil with profit sharing and endorsments maxing out at 50 mil. Likely hood of even coming close pretty slim, right? |

Beckham is a merchandising machine though. Real Madrid's profits went through the roof the first season they signed him. Definitely on the slide a bit now though, but still a TRUE sporting 'superstar'. |

Guy is racking in the cash, ain't denying that. Point is dude isn't ever gonna see 50 mil a year if half that. To further clarify my arguement I was telling this guy that the LA Galaxy is DEFIENTLY not paying him that, its all endorsements, though some is base salary and profit sharing. |

Gotcha, yeah there isn't a chance he'll be getting anything near a million bucks a week from LA Galaxy, i'd say $300,000 max. |

Concur. Perhaps far more. The 50 mill a year was accounting/marketing projections. I don't think he's "capped." If he sells more than expected, he can easily make more. |

All depends on how well he is receieved by the American public. I know that footy continues to grow in the states, and he is to be used to give the game a bigger profile. For me he's on a winner: He comes with a great C.V. et al Man United (the biggest club in the world), and Real Madrid. He was also the England captain, and perhaps more importantly he's a good looking 'barsteward', thus a marketing dream.
So, 50 million dollars is doable, and with his fame seeking wife I'm sure he will maximize every endorsement that is offered to him. Don't know when his addidas contract ends, but if it is imminent then I'm sure Nike would be appreciative of his services. All that aside, I would state that his best footballing days are behind him. Indeed, when Ferguson sold him in 2003 to Real Madrid for 20 million pounds, he was definitely on the slide. Ferguson was criticized for his actions, but Fergie has been proven to be correct. Post 2003 he did very little for Real Madrid, and indeed England. If Ericcson would have had more of a spine, his England playing days should have ended much sooner. Anyhow, just my 2 pence, and after all he is making a bundle, and I am just a mere esl instructor!!

Ericcson and the rest of the squad would have been watching the WC from the sidelines more than likely if it weren't for Beckham's 93rd minute free kick vs. Greece, which qualified Engerland. |

The press reports when he joined LA stated it was a 5 year deal worth $250 Million. So in that case it is almost a million a week.
I understand that the MSL have a structure by which a player on a team can be paid more than is designated by the wage structure, now known as the beckham rule http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beckham_rule
I think a lot of his salary is being paid by his sponsors, as they see the potential returns of Bekcham making it big in America a good gamble compared with the cost of helping LA Galaxy pay his salary. |

yeah, see, I read that but am I the only one in the world reading the COULD be part? Its based on merch sales and profiting sharing from the team. So Beck's actually has to, ya know, SELL that many jeresys ect. MLS doesn't even have a decent tv contract in the United States which is where a huge amount of club revenue comes from. I mean, reading up, the league has lost 350 million since inception so Beck's alone is gonna gonna shoot the revenue up for his team enough that he is gonna see the full scale fullment of his contract? It seems dubious to me at best. I was really hoping for is some deeper contract analysis from some footy mags out of Europe. |

Just found this on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_beckham
It was confirmed on 11 January 2007 that David Beckham would be leaving Real Madrid to join MLS team Los Angeles Galaxy on a 5 year deal that will see Beckham earn up to $10 million a year in direct salary, but with endorsements and profit-sharing, Beckham could earn up to $50 million a year and earning about 90 dollars every second on the field
Shifter, i am a subscriber to 442 magazine and i am surprised they havent done an article yet on the deal. We will probably have to wait until he makes his debut and then we will get some more information. |

Yeah, I heard the 1 million a week too. But the contract structure means that he would have to play all five years to see it. Very unlkely.
You see in the NFL player getting 70 million for 7 years, which is ten million a year right? Nope. Something like 3.5 first year, 7.5 second year, 15 third year, 25 fourth etc...
His contract if completely fulfilled is about that, but I doubt very much its going to happen. |

David Beckham's playing contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy is worth about $27.5 million in base salary over five seasons, according to a person familiar with Major League Soccer agreements.
Beckham's average base salary of about $5.5 million was disclosed on Friday by a person who had been briefed on the deal the English star agreed to last month and who spoke on condition of anonymity because those details had not been announced. |
MLS only has to pay 400K a year of the base 5.5 million a year. he has the potential to make up to 250 million with tickets, merchandise, movies, tv etc...but AEG basically used that number to get everyone's attention. |

Yeah, see this was what I was getting at when this dumb arguement started. I just didn't have the figures because, well why the hell would I memorize David Beckham's contract. Now I want the specifics so next to i see this guy I can crush him. I am a jerk like that. I find the business end of sports fascinating, I should get involved in that instead of this teaching gig.... |
