Future of Iraq: The spoils of war
How the West will make a killing on Iraqi oil riches
| Quote: |
By Danny Fortson, Andrew Murray-Watson and Tim Webb
Published: 07 January 2007
Iraq's massive oil reserves, the third-largest in the world, are about to be thrown open for large-scale exploitation by Western oil companies under a controversial law which is expected to come before the Iraqi parliament within days.
The US government has been involved in drawing up the law, a draft of which has been seen by The Independent on Sunday. It would give big oil companies such as BP, Shell and Exxon 30-year contracts to extract Iraqi crude and allow the first large-scale operation of foreign oil interests in the country since the industry was nationalised in 1972.
The huge potential prizes for Western firms will give ammunition to critics who say the Iraq war was fought for oil. They point to statements such as one from Vice-President Dick Cheney, who said in 1999, while he was still chief executive of the oil services company Halliburton, that the world would need an additional 50 million barrels of oil a day by 2010. "So where is the oil going to come from?... The Middle East, with two-thirds of the world's oil and the lowest cost, is still where the prize ultimately lies," he said. |

| They can come up with any fool idea they want, but until people can move freely around the country without having to worry about getting killed 30 seconds after they step out of their tank, I don't think much is going to get done. They may as well be selling plots of land on the moon. |

Oil is flowing.
There is also the Iran issue, which would guarantee a much broader war and/or presence in the ME, thus possibly securing the oil via a massive influx of military power.
There is also the active work of the Bush Cadre now underway to dissuade the purchase of oil from Iran and the use of Kazahk (sp?) oil.
This leads us to the pipeline that many claim was the reason for Iraq. It is/was to go from Kaszahk down through Afghanistan, Iraq, to the Gulf, or something like that.
And my fellow Americans are stupid/servile/scared enough to allow this shit to go on and on, so long as they are comfy.
It ain't over till the fat lady sings. |

Its flowing at a rate of 2 million bbls a day. That hasn't changed in years.
| Quote: |
| "Since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, oil production has been stuck at about 2 million bpd, with exports of 1.5 million bpd. That compares with pre-war output of just under 3 million bpd and exports of around 2 million bpd." |
They wanted to be doing 3.5 million by now. |

And don't you think there's a reason they can't pump more oil? It's called the insurgency. Major oil companies aren't going to start wild catting when you can't walk a block outside of the Green Zone without risk of being killed. |

Ummm. Seriously, if you actually did take such a course in university, you rarely demonstrate such knowledge or ability. Yet again, it seems you dodge the debate by waving your hands around and claiming argumentation exists elsewhere.
That's two I've won. Not doing so good these days. Off your game. |

Ad hominem. Brilliant.
it was covered. I responded to exactly the point you raised previously. This is the second time you've been too lazy to read the threads you participate in. The previous time I intellectually beat the shit out of you, then reposted it, quoted from where it had, in fact, been posted.
Round two, or you gonna do some reading? |

Delusions are grand. Here we go, son (from this very page):

I should add, 2M is plenty. They aren't rebuilding Iran, they're lining their pockets. It doesn't need to be more than 2M. |

This has nothing to do with the fact that Iraq is a killing zone only getting worse and I'm skeptical big oil is ready to start sending in their valued staff.
(And speaking of complaints about ad hominem, just take a gander at your sig line, eh. When do you start calling me "scrotum"?) |

Who, exactly, do you think is pumping the oil now? Have you not noticed the dearth of reports of attacks on pipelines in many months?

How big of you to support gopher's disgusting remarks. You obviously do not understand what ad hominem means. Look it up. Oh, wait, you don't do that....
An ad hominem has to be within the context of an argument and is intended to taint the argument by tainting the source of the argument: the speaker. For a direct quote of gopher's to be in my sig line is not ad hominem. It is a factual recounting of his behavior. It does not affect his arguments at all, but it does advise others as to his complete lack of character.
You, in the past, were a useful poster. You have fallen to reacting to my posts in a given way simply because they are posted by me. That is weak-minded. |
