Anyone seen this movie? Watched it last night and rate it as the best world war movie I've seen so far this year. There isn't a strong emphasis on action if you're looking for pearl harbour sheebangs as the story is mostly based on how the Japanese soldiers, willingly and unwillingly, fought defending an island from the Americans.
If 300 was too over the top, LfIJ would be a nice change. |

Oddly enough I saw it on my PC last night too. Its defiently the stronger of the two Eastwood movies. Did a good job of displaying the hopelessness of their situation. Quality flick. |

PC of course. It is a great flick when I think about it, Ken Watanabe did an awesome job as the General in command leading his troops into a hopeless situation. I used to think that the Japanese were largely unemotional as actors and too rigid to be seen as anything other. |

I'd recommend getting the dvd at Youngsan market. You'll get better sound and image. In my case, I have a 29" TV to watch it on.
This is the next best thing to the obvious best choice - see it in the cinema.
But I don't see this coming out here. I don't think any film that portrays the Japanese in a positive light is going to go over well here. |

and watch the other "flags of our fathers" because i'm told (haven't seen IJ yet) because there's apparently a lot of shared scenes - like scenes that take place at the same time but from different POV according to the protagonist of the movie. a cool idea. |

Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima are both directed by Clint Eastwood(Great Actor/Director) They were made to show each side in the conflict. |

that's what i was talking about. what i was referring to was having 2 separate movies that shared the same set, filmed with different characters from 2 separate POV. possibly at the same time, i'm not sure. a great idea. |

saw them both, and letters was definitely the better movie. There's no character overlap, even in bit parts, but a couple of scenes where you get to compare the perspectives on a scene, like the shot from Suribatchi with the ocean full of US destroyers.
The Japanese military doesn't come off all that well in Letters, but ordinary grunts were played with great realism, which is a very welcome thing, especially in the west right now, where so many people seem to have forgot that soldiers are people first, and that fighting is just their job. |

I saw Flags of Our Fathers on DVD when I visited my folks this past winter. I haven't seen the other Eastwood flick yet, but I plan to. FoOF was especially meaningful to our family, as my dad was there (and saw both flags raised on Suribachi), and the DVD was released on his birthday. |

I looked at a copy in Yongsan in the weekend. Has English subs already with Korean over top (but I am sure you can turn that off).
Quality wasn't very good though. I didn't have time or energy to preview other sellers' copies though, I just looked at one place's stand. |

I downloaded a dvd screener, burnt it to dvd and watched it on my big screen.
I wouldn't say it portrays the Japanese in a positive light. However, it shows another perspective and it shows that these soldiers are just human, after all. |
