I like to show Audio / Visual clips in class most are 3 minutes or less. What file format should I use when saving the video clips that will have the best chance of working with older machines running Windows 98?
I change classrooms a lot (about 50 in total) and do not have the time (or interest) in spending a lot of time doing set up. I have Total Video Converter software so I can convert the video clips to almost any file format. They are small files so I do care a lot about saving space. What format should I use that will have the best chance of working in all machines?
Thanks in advance for your advice! |

What I would do is invest in a USB thumb drive and spend a bit of time installing drivers for each of the machines. Yes, this is a pain, but once it's done, it's done. Then just run VLC off of the flash drive, along with any clip you want to show in whatever format works easiest for you. It's more work at the beginning, but it means no conversion time later on.
On the other hand, MPEG-1 is fairly basic and should work on everything, from 98 up. Just depends on what you want to do. |

Yeah, I have a USB thumb drive (flash drive), Windows 98 does not support it. It needs a driver installed separately to make it work. I would have to burn a CD with the driver on it to load so I could make my USB work, or download it off the interneta lot of the machines have been beat around by the kids, on some CD ROMS do not work on the next machine maybe someone has been chewing on the internet cable.....if any glitches or dialog boxes that come up are written in Korean (I can not read Korean)......this is why I am trying to avoid alot of instal and get to the basics.
VLC does not work with Win 98, if you check out the VLC web site you will see VLC has no interest in making it so. One other problem..the kids are always messing with the machines, once something is installed..it does not always stay that way. |

Well, there you go - MPEG-1 should work in Media Player 7. |

tell you boss to invest in a computer that can handle an operating system that isn't 9 years old. And also tell him to password protect the computers so the little buggers can't touch anything, of course give the password to instructors. |
