What's the chances of me getting away with a one-way ticket to korea from canada with a visa on arrival?

Worth chancing it or should i buy cheap onward flight to japan and try to cancel and get refund?

This has been covered more times than you could imagine.

You may or may not have a problem at the check in counter at the airport. Immigration never checks unless they suspect some other problem (eg: no contact address/phone number on your entry card) or your passport has been flagged for further scrutiny.

Airlines are the ones who face fines and the cost of your removal if you are refused entry for non compliance of entry requirements. Air Canada (A.C. check-in counters) are positively ANAL about checking that you meet entry requirements (onward ticket). Other airlines are hit and miss.

You will probably be fine BUT be prepared to purchase an onward ticket at check in time if the clerk gives you a hard time.

If you purchase an OPEN ticket for a Japan/Korea trip BEFORE you get to the airport it will meet the requirements, save you buying it later for your visa run and save you any problems at the check-in counter.

reference:
In all cases:
1. visitor must hold:
- return/onward ticket (if not advised otherwise) and all documents required for next destination; and
- sufficient funds for maintenance; and
- contact address in Korea Rep.

Just buy a ticket on your credit card and ash in the other half when you get here. You'll have the money or credit within a month.
