Dude, welcome and I hope it benefits us all whatever you do. Please come here with an open mind and remember that it's a strange blend this country - world class conveniences mixed with a high density of population and a completely different society to Western countries in general. Please try and learn the language AND the culture. Don't be deterred by people that say it's not necessary, too hard, time consuming and unrewarding financially to learn. If you just learn a bit even, you will be pleasently surprised at the rewards.
Above all, please remember that you're comming to a country that is only 50 years out of a bloody, cruel, war and you may well be seen as the decadent foreigner who's brother's were responsibe for Korea getting caught in the crossfire as the big cold war heavy weights moved their chess pieces around the Korean peninsula, in effect turning Korean brother against Korean brother. Who knows if it's true?
If you're of black or middle eastern ethnic background, you might face discrimination. You need to try and win these people over.
Unfortunately, you may not work for the most most desireable of people in your first year, unless you really do your homework. If you go to work for a Hagwon (accademy) be prepared to work hard. You'll need to shape up fast and make a genuine go at being a teacher be professional and smell good (clothes too!!). Try to do as your fellow Korean teachers do, at least for a while. They work very hard - typically doing additional classes and tele-teaching, meeting parents, creating class resources such as flashcards, even cleaning...and all for LESS money than you will make. You'll win them over by understanding their position and respecting them as much as possible.
There are no real paedophile or sicko problems generally in Korea so please don't get all bothered and insecure, uncomfortable etc. if you are in the same room as only one or two students. They will be very affectionate towards you and trusting. They are not brought up to be paranoid, as many kids in the West are. They will in fact be fascinated by you and the young ones will approach you frequently.
As a rule, I am far less vocal or critical of things here than I would be in my home country as it's not my country (I don't/can't vote here). I usually turn a blind eye to the policies, actions, and attitudes of Korea/Korean people as I don't want to upset or interfere with their way of life (that is unless it's a serious crime).
Please don't ever look down on Koreans or Korean people. They are usually very proud, as are decent people of any country if they admit it. Sometimes, they may annoy you by being over proud or apparently inflating or exaggerating their countries achievements, but they don't mean to annoy you. In fact they mean to impress you!
It's very competive here, and because family bonds are so strong and the working members of a family often look after the non working members,
the "screwing each other over" that some foreigners call it is a little misplaced. Koreans are mercenary-like in their competitivenss but strangely, it's almost never based on selfishness, rather it's usually based on selflessness. Crime is very low and you will at all times feel safe, that is unless you are around too many other foreigners.
I could go on for hours and have wrote this better so it's just a taste. I'm sure there are other people on here that will disagree with what I say.
I'm honestly just trying to make my life easier by improving the image of foreign teachers in Korea, and also because overall I like these people. Some are asshats however!! |
