I drink it and drink it and never seem to get the same caffeinated buzz I got back home. Which coffee packs the biggest punch? Nescafe kinda sucks and at the moment taster's choice is all I've got. |

yes, instant coffee crystals and cold can coffee here is just swill not worth drinking. I get Hikkoka coffee beans at Homeplus and have a young sales woman in a short skirt, big shoes and sweater like socks grind it finely in a grinder machine. This is very strong gourmet coffee just like the premium coffee in the USA loaded with caffiene, but at twice the price. A 7 ounce costs almost 9,000 Won. |

Sounds like we go to the same home plus.
The instant Maxwell instant coffee has virtually no coffee in it. If you look you'll notice it's about 80% sugar. And even the "pure" coffee is weak as hell. Buy a coffee pot (Home Plus has them for as cheap as 10,000 won) and real coffee. It's worth it. |

Yes, thats right, but most of it is low quality. Much of the coffee grounds here are way outdated, low caffiene, and have no smell or taste. Other coffee that is brewed for you at coffee shops trying to be Starbucks knockoffs is nothing more than hot chocolate. Other small coffee shops like one in an Emart store, will serve up super strong expresso shots in tiny cups. Other coffee shops are not what they say they are. (another topic)
Starbucks in Busan and Seoul are half decent quality (not as good as Starbucks in the US), but it's rediculously over priced for a grande size glass that's half the size of an American grande glass making it about 4X as expensive at home with less rich aromatic gourmet flavor. I still go when in Seoul or Busan as Starbucks are great places to meet other foreigners and chat. The half million people Korean city I live in does not yet have one single Starbucks, but one is slated to open at the end of this year in a new downtown office building being built while we have several knocks offs serving up weak swill and chocolate in 1 book store, 3 department stores, and 1 business center style place.
This Hikkoka coffee at Homeplus is the best thing I know of and it's exceptionally good. I will continue brewing my coffee at home as there is nowhere conveniently located to go have coffee in the morning. It would be nice to go have coffee and chat with people in the mornings before work. Sometimes at work we drink that instant crap while checking email before our first class, but we are so bored of each other and bored silly here to the point of stagnation that it's pointless any more to try conversing any more than saying, "good morning", over our cups of swill. I tend to associate drinking gourmet coffee with morning socialization and exchanging ideas with others, but now the caffiene rich Hikkoka is my only friend in the mornings. |
