I don't really want to do it, but it looks like I will be buyiing a new laptop before going to Korea. That means going Vista. I don't want this thread to get into rants about Microsoft, etc. I like to keep my relligion and my OSs separate. I just want some useful information from people with experience.

Will I be able to use my old software with Vista? What are people finding?

I have an unused McAfee 2006 antivirus disk, and am wondering if it will work. Or do I have to buy a new program?

Actually, I would like to load Windows 2000 onto the laptop, but I don't know if I will be able to find drivers. Perhaps go dual boot. So I can use my software from my XP laptop.

Obviously, Vista is not quite ready for primetime. But it is likely to improve on newer models. I see that it is designed to work with a new hybrid hard drive, which will have up to 2 GB of flash memory built in. Samsung is making these things now, supposedly, but I haven't seen any, and it will be quite a while before they are affordable, I suspect.

You might need an HP version of Windows 2000... i'm guessing. I have an HP, and I couldn't load my own version of XP on it. You'd better call HP support and ask them before you buy. Many laptops block you from loading Windows that's not from them (and including all of their ad crap).

I bought a Dell laptop before I came to Korea that came with Vista, and overall I haven't really had too many problems with software compatability, although I ended up with an *aquired* copy of Office 2007 because the copy of Office 2003 I had just wouldn't install. Here are a couple links that have software compatiability lists for Vista. They are by no means fully comprehensive, and may be becoming a little out of date already, but a step in the right direction:
