Can you imagine a president from a Western country being this honest with their farmers and telling them it's time they were weaned off their agricultural welfare? Good for Roh.

"The farmers have become the latest target for one of President Roh Moo-hyuns bitter homilies. He said farms produce commercial goods and thus must deal with the market. He added that if farm products are not price-competitive, farmers will have difficulty staying in business. He finished by urging farmers to face reality."

Its about goddamn time. I have this fight all the time with my bf and he always counters with the need to be food self-sufficient, bollocks. It is about time for Korea, and the rest of the 1st world, to learn that farmers had better make a product cheaply or its going to be offshored. No more protection or aid for farmers, let the market rule.

Tariffs on rice coming into South Korea are at 1000% right now. 1000%.

Noh has to do this, but I suggest that this thread is misnamed; better that we say Noh is ahead of the curve, so much of Korea is still behind.

The Han-Mi FTA is so important for both countries. Exports have been declining between the two and the hope is that given Japan's interdependence on these two markets, a lowering of barriers between the US and South Korea will eventually force Japanese barriers down.

If the Han-Mi FTA passes, it will be hard for the farmers, but not as hard as if it does not pass and they have to face some later hurdle with a country that has an even cheaper labor force. Mack is right, though, it is strange that Noh is so courageous on this issue while the US Congress continues to pass billion dollar 'emergency'* farm aid bills through.

*Emergency just means that they can exceed pre-setCongressional budget limitations; normally for disaster relief or warfare, but here applied for farm aid.

Your BF is Koreans? Just a wild guess, but he is a 'bottom?'.

The farmers, Chaebol etc etc are hold the whole nation of consumers down. Low quality, high priced goods are the norm. They have an inferior consumer market in every way. I hope Roh isn't just talking out of his ass.

The economic nationalism is getting out of hand there. The Financial Times on Tuesday had a great full page (big full page) article on how Korea is in an either/or situation. Either you adapt or you decline. They are not going to maintain their quality of living without major changes. The manufacturing is en route to China already. Japan has the ultra high-tech market down. Korea cannot avoid her situation. She must follow the UK model.

Do your boyfriends know about eachother? By both ways, do you mean you bang girls too?

An interesting little subculture you got there.

Yes, both boyfriends know about each other, I meant i top and bottom, but yes I also sleep with women from time to time. I actually dated a woman for 4 years in Uni.

Only a fool deprives himself of all the earthly pleasures.

Lol, my top has a big piece, there are some koreans with big ones but they are rare. My bottom has a small one, hence his being a bottom. And FYI, the male G-spot is in the anus. Don't deny yourself the earthly pleasures.

Every time I try to have a serious conversation about farm subsidies, someone turns it into a discussion about gay anal sex. God I'm sick of it.
