Hi,
I'm moving to Seoul next month and have had most questions about Korea answered just from reading Dave's, so thanks to you guys for posting good info!
I was wondering about tanning in Korea? Are tanning salons common? Expensive? Is it acceptable to lay out in a bikini at a park/lawn? Summer's coming up and I'd like to keep some good color. Very Happy
Any info would be great, thanks!

um.....even at some of the beaches the women DO NOT wear bikinis. You are seeing more and moe but it is not the norm. Laying out in a park well in my seven years here I have never seen in done. This is a very conservative country and unless there is some kind of sleeve that covers the shoulders in some schools they frown on that.

You will get "aren't you cold" comment which means "put a shirt on that covers your bare shoulders hussy"

There are some tanning salons in Seoul. However, as good as things can be here I would not trust their cleaniness nor their maintenence.

I have a problem that I am endowed pretty well and once wore a cap sleeved blouse. Under the blouse was a rather sturdy bra I bought at V.S. that is supposed to have more coverage in the n i p p l e area. But a they made an appearence. Nothing sexy or anything it was just that you could tell I had them. I was told they must not be seen.

If you are going to tan. I suggest you do at tanning salons at home and hope they put you in villa with a roof. Probably give the neighbors a thrill but a park I don't think that would be a good idea. Remember it wasn't that long ago when the police could haul you in and have arrested for wearing a short skirt.

Also when you get melanoma from all this tanning let me know there is actually a good dermatolgist here that can recommend a good cancer doctor.

Jade who is beige and plans to stay that way.

I've seen people laying out at Yeouinaru...

If you really want to lay out, just come to the Hamilton Hotel's rooftop pool during the summer...There's always something interesting happening there during the summer.

Not to mention, tanning will prematurely age you. We are all going to get enough wrinkles without smoking, drinking too much, and ESPECIALLY tanning. It's cancer waitiing to happen.

I highly doubt kimchi causes stomach/liver cancer. More like alcohol. Rolling Eyes Kimchi is one of the world's healthiest foods.

It appears that Kimchi may cause problems if excessive amounts are eaten. In moderation it can actually help fight stomach cancer.
Thankfully Koreans don't eat Kimchi at every meal or take things to the extreme Wink

Kimchi
This article refers to the traditional Korean dish. For the family of scholars known as Kimchi, Qimchi and Kimhi, see the article on Qimchi. The health properties of kimchi are due to a variety of factors. Kimchi is usually made with cabbage, onions, and garlic, all of which have well-known health benefits. Kimchi also has active and beneficial bacterial cultures, like yogurt. Lastly, kimchi contains liberal quantities of hot pepper, which has been suggested to have health benefits as well.

In East Asia, the low number of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) cases in Korea is sometimes attributed to the Korean habit of eating large quantities of kimchi, although no definitive link between kimchi consumption and SARS resistance has ever been scientifically established [1]. There is some evidence that indicates that kimchi may be used to treat avian influenza in birds. Scientists at Seoul National University say they fed an extract of kimchi to 13 infected chickens - and a week later 11 of them had started recovering. There is currently no evidence of its effects on humans.

What healthful properties kimchi may have are disputed, and the dish has also been linked to negative health effects. In a June 2005 study of gastric cancer risk, South Korean researchers uncovered a 50% higher risk of stomach cancer among heavy consumers of kimchi, and suggested high kimchi consumption may be responsible for the fact that rates of gastric cancer in Korea and Japan are 10 times higher than in the United States. [2]. However, talc, an irritant used in white rice in both countries has been posed as a possible alternative cause. [3] Some studies have linked its consumption to a reduced risk of gastric cancer, but other studies have linked consumption of certain types of kimchi (containing radish) to an increased cancer risk. [4] [5] The very high concentrations of salt in kimchi itself and the fish sauce used for flavoring may also be an issue, as high salt intake can cause problems such as hypertension.
Trivia
*In US slang, "kimchi" is occasionally used in the phrase "in deep kimchi," a euphemism for "in deep trouble." This phrase is particularly common in the US military community which has had a presence in South Korea since the Korean War.One example of this use is found in It briefly gained prominence when it was used during the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign.
*Most Koreans have a separate refrigerator to store kimchi. Kimchi is well known for having a very distinguishable smell and is often considered an acquired taste.
*When taking photographs, South Koreans often say the word "kimchi" in much the same way English-speakers would use the word "cheese".[6]
*Kimchi juice is often shared between a bride and groom before a wedding.
*In the popular online computer game, World of Warcraft, players can purchase "Winter Kimchi" from a vendor in Everlook, a town in Winterspring.

Too much kimchi might be bad for you

"We found that if you were a very, very heavy eater of kimchi, you had a 50% higher risk of getting stomach cancer," said Kim Heon of the department of preventive medicine at Chungbuk National University and one of the authors. "It is not that kimchi is not a healthy food it is a healthy food, but in excessive quantities there are risk factors."

It could be that the danger of kimchi might be from the large amount of salt in it, "which could combine with red pepper to form a carcinogen."

anything in excess is not good for you. moderation is the key. everyone here is nagging about tanning and how it can kill you...bla bla bla. But there are benefits to tanning (in moderation of course)...it actually makes your skin smoother, gets rid of acne, and the uv light in tanning bulbs is actually healthier than sun light light, much healthier.

Tanning does not kill, cancer does...

If you are a responsible tanner, then it's likely that tanning beds will be beneficial for you. What is a responsible tanner? Going tanning no more than once per week, using appropriate tanning creams that are not only anti-aging, anti-wrikle, but also block off some of the uv light off the bulbs. Also moisturizing your skin, after you tan, and everytime you take a shower will extend your tan, and thus you will be able to prolong your tan, and decrease the frequency of going tanning. Soon after that, once every two weeks or more will be just fine.

on the other hand, smoking can kill you, so can alcohol, drugs, and other things...so why don't you nag about that...Let me guess cuz you're doin' it?
