What do you mean 'why not?'

Perhaps because gotten is the past participle of get, not the past simple form as in get/got/gotten, just as with forget, it is forget/forgot/forgotten.

Burnt, burned

learnt, learned

gilt, guilded

spoilt, spoiled

wept, weeped

spilt, spilled

spelt, spelled

smelt, smelled

leant, leaned.

etc etc.

All those verbs have two acceptable forms of the past simple/past participle in both American and British English, however, the irregular form is generally more common in British English (the first form of the two) and the regular form is more common to American English. Wink

I learnt about the birds and the bees in science class--sitting next to my honey Sue. And, at the same time, I was taught by Dr. Kimche that flora and fauna are learned borrowings from Latin. What a joy that class turned out to be! I also learned about the rules of chess... Very Happy
