Have you seen the recent commercial of the young Western woman being seduced by the Korean man with Cacao 72 chocolate balls?
Not that I care about Korean men dating Western women, but hey, why is it that I NEVER see any ads with Western men seducing Korean women?
Would this be considered unpatriotic? a blow to the Korean male ego?
Or are the acceptable gender ads indicative of the stereotype that Western women are sirens and sluts, so why not revel in it to sell products?
And, hey, I thought such exotic depictions of Orientals were the exclusive reserve of non-P.C. Western male sales executives?
What gives? |

Is that guy Korean? Like 100%? I always thought he was mixed BUT maybe I'm thinking of a different commercial....
Interesting question. Never thought much of it actually. Slightly off topic but I like sending friends music videos where Koreans beat up or out dance or cheat on Black people....There aren't many but they crack me up |

If it is Dennis Oh, then I'm 99% sure he is half korean. |

I have noticed this too. Still, I also used to think that they only used Western women in underwear ads, but that isn't true. Maybe, like me, we just aren't noticing those, only the ones that deal more with us. That is a pretty normal human thing.
Still, on the news (I watch it a lot), whenever they talk about exercise or something good, they show Koreans. But ALWAYS (from what I have seen, so this is not fact) show clips of westerners when they talk about obesity, over drinking, prostitution, drug use or smoking in Korea (and it's rise or fall).
While not sure about the OP's one, I have actively tried to find a showing of clips involving Koreans for those subjects and haven't. But again, I obviously don't watch every news program on every channel, so it probably just seems that way. |

I saw a freebee magazine in Subway Restaurant (Itaewon) that had a shirtless Korean guy on the cover, and some western woman going all ga-ga over him.
Then last night, I saw the commercial where the old white women are admiring the stunningly muscle-less Korean guy while doing exercises at a pool.
And now your chocolate ad.
It's almost as if they're trying in desperation to create demand from nothing. Perhaps there is some kind of national secret campaign to make up for the lack of western female interest in the locals?
By the way, it's not the look of Korean guys that's the turn-off -- it's the way they act in this local culture that's a put-off for many Western women. There are a few "gems" who western women have happily married, however.
The current make-up covered girly-look doesn't help, either. |

I find it like that in every corner of Korean society. In Korean movies, I have never seen a K-girl linked with a Western Man. I have also read articles in the Korea Times about Koreans marrying foreigners. In the 3 page spread there is not one mention of any Korean women marrying outside of the race at all.....it is all Korean Men.
I asked one of my students about this. He told me quote "Women aren't counted in this statistic because if they marry a man from another country than they are no longer Korean."
I don't know how true this statement is, but true or not it goes to show the mentality of a lot of the men in this country. |

Its cuz outside of Korea, finding a korean dude and a western woman is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Its more common to find western guy with korean woman. i guess they put it into commercials to give the Korean guys some rays of hope. |

Because it's meant to appeal to Koreans? Since generally chocolate is bought for women (by women or men) you'd expect it to pander to the korean male.
It might also be a point that Korean models and famous women don't want to do an ad with a Western guy to preserve their image. I can understand that, if it would hurt their career. And I have seen some hyo ri adverts (GXPX? - dunno) with hyo ri posing sexily with White geezers.
Much easier and cheaper, then, to cut out all the expensive middle men, and just get an attractive western student. She's happy, ad company's happy, who isn't? |

| What about that coffee (Tea? Some sort of hot beverage?) commercial where the Korean women brings the blonde Western-type guy home to meet her family? |

Yeah, I know what you mean. Lee Hyo Rhi sleeps with me three nights a week, and no matter how much I threaten to break it off, she absolutely refuses to be seen in public with me, because it might hurt her career.
It really sucks being a western male with a hot TV star girlfriend.
No respect! |

| Just to play devil's advocate, how often do you see advertising in the west showing an Asian guy with a western woman? That being said, prevailing attitudes to interracial dating here would probably preclude a KF/WM pairing from being shown on TV. |

That's because in the west, they're worried about pissing off the portly western females, who carry a lot more buying power. |

Isn't it just common sense to include your demographic in the ad? These commercials are flogging their products to Koreans (Korean males I'm guessing) in Korea. Why would they feature Western guys?
You might as well ask, Why are there only two Korean characters in the cast of Lost? I always thought it was interesting that the nationalities of Lost are pretty compatible to shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race. They try to represent the demographics of their audience in a multi-cultural society. Do you remember the notion of token blacks? Inclusive, in proportion.
Korea's pretty much homogenous, and there's not enough money in trying to appeal to the Western customer, on Korean TV, advertising in the Korean language, when you're targeting the Korean audience.
Not everything is about you, Steve. |

One little thing. I heard there are many Russian models in Korea, so they might not necessarily be 'western' women in those ads.

I think they just mean Korean men who married to foreigners tend to stay in Korea while Korean female counterparts move away with their partners more often. |
