One, I'm about as surprised as I was when the sun came up today. But I don't understand your comment. Only Korea?

Maybe because in Korea they can pull you off the street for a urine test and throw you in jail if you smoked on vacation in Thailand but in some more sane countries a cop would just tell you to put out that joint you are smoking. What about the Korean dude who recently wrote on his blog about smoking in Amsterdam and the Korean police questioned him? I think the OP was referring to the close mindedness of society here, and yes there are other countries that are as well.

Two points to ponder.

Careful what you wish for:

""The rankings also suggest the need for better regulation of the more harmful drugs that are currently legal, i.e. tobacco and alcohol,"

Lies, damned lies, and statistics:

"Tobacco causes 40 percent of all hospital illnesses, while alcohol is blamed for more than half of all visits to hospital emergency rooms."

I'm all for legalising narcotics. But, speed can be pretty nasty. Not the best drug to mention when pitching the decriminalisation argument.

Don't know about that, previous weed discussions on here have seen a lot of people thinking it was the work of the devil- guess that's why they like Korea so much. Just wait until they all get home from church and start raging about the evils of sweeeeeeet sweet ghanja!

Anybody who has done speed or some any of it's forms knows that it is not in the same league as ganja. Just as anybody who has smoked a little dope knows it's not in the same league as alcohol.

Narcotics are drugs that alleviate physical pain, suppress coughing, induce constipation, induce anesthesia and produce tolerance and addiction. Natural narcotics are derived from the Opium poppy and synthetic narcotics are made to act like the constituents of Opium (thebaine, morphine, codeine).

In other words, marijuana is not a narcotic (if that's what you mean) and 'narcotic' is an often wrongly used term to include marijuana and cocaine (a central nervous system stimulant). US federal laws (and most state laws) restricting Marijuana's usage erroneously define it as such.

And speed may be nasty, but given that alcohol and tobacco are perfectly legal, there seems no obvious reason why any substance should be illegal on the grounds that they are nasty. The whole concept of illegality in drugs is complete crap, since drugs do not become any less dangerous when control of them is handed over to the black market and also, in Western countries, there is a clear link between illegality and prevalence.

Yeah, okay. I said I was pro-legalisation. You're preaching to the choir.

Basically both tobacco and alcohol are highly addictive - and cause over half of peoples deaths and medically related problems in western countries...

whereas neither marijuana NOR ectacy are addictive - and both almost cause no deaths at all....

(people argue that the latter two cause other psyhological problems - whereas - other SMARTER people know - the psychological problems were ALWAYS there - only the "illegal" drugs brought them to the surface....

HOWVER - from people (like myself) - who are addicted to tobacco and alcohol - and are dying from tobacco/alcohol symptons such as fucked up lungs and infected livers....

I state that alcohol and tobacco are FAR WORSE than marijuana and ectascy...

AND WHY????? am I arguing this on the "Dicscussion site - for foreigners living and working in korea"????

Because there are sever penalties for "drug" possession in this country as you well know. here is an article showing the mounting evidence for the need to at the least reclassify substances.

Is it just me or can anyone else see drugs being reclassified in most western countries in the next 5 years?

If so, where will that put the northeast asian countries?

There, now does *that* make it "pertinent"?
