So I'm looking for tailored suits and shirts, and Seoul seems to be a good place to get them, but there are SO MANY TAILORS...especially in Itaewon. Anyone out there that could recommend a good one anywhere in Seoul that they have used? I see a lot in itaewon, but i'm always suspicious they are more expensive because it is a tourist spot. anyone out there give me a hand in choosing a place that tailors Suits and Shirts, and roughly what i should be paying for each. Hopefully someone can recommend one as I am spoiled for choice. Thanks everyone, i look forward to hearing your experiences.

I've been recommended Hahn's tailor, and I had a fitting a couple days ago. Prices are higher than the others ($450 and up), but Mr. Hahn seems to be on the up and up, and the place is highly recommended.

Hahn's is around the corner from McDonald's, right by Suji's restaurant.

If you want, I can re-post once I've gotten the finished suits.

Also, for comparison, I've had suits made at one other Itaewon tailor (also recommended, but by only one person). The suits were cheap (under $400), well-made (but not great, just great for the price), BUT they're styled for an older generation (high waist, extra space around the middle, broad legs, slight shoulder pad).

The ones I'm getting from Hahn's should be tailored a *little* tighter to my frame and will have natural shoulders. I also expect better general attention to detail (box stitching, things like that).

anyone else know of a reliable place? i'm hoping to find one outside itaewon as i'm almost sure it will be cheaper, since more suits from itaewon are probably made in places like Dongdaenum anyway.

No, Itaewon is usually cheaper, and the cutting/sewing is definitely done in Itaewon. I've heard most Itaewon tailors get the work done in the same couple of factories, but I personally saw Hahn's sewing area (directly behind Suji's restaurant).

I had my fitting today, and it was great. As I said, I'm not tailoring expert, but it was clearly a superior job to the other places I've been in Itaewon, and superior to rack suits I've bought in the States (Brooks Brothers, I'm looking at you...)

My husband and I had the suits for the men in our wedding party made at Manchester, just down the road a bit from Hahns. They were good prices and the suits were great, and two of them were made only off of measurements, no actual fittings. Can't remember what the guy called himself though...Joseph maybe?

There is a place in COEX @ Samsong-dong station where you can get nice modern custom made suits.
Its only about 800,000-1,000,000 won per one and fits great.

Best place for suits is a store called Othello. The Itaewon branch used to be great, but they young lady who manages it now seems so very uncomfortable with foreigners coming in her shop. The previous lady wasn't like that. I noticed the Itaewon prices went way up when the younger lady took over. It's above the Greek restaurant in the 3-Alley pub area, but that snot doesn't seem to take part in the better prices. Go to Apkujeong.

The Apkujeong branch is cheaper, and the main store branch, so go there. Addresses are below, and I will do my best to interpret where. Some people there speak English (Apkujeong) if memory serves. They run some great specials on really nice suits. I prefer Armani style:

http://www.othello.co.kr/

Here is a great special ending tomorrow (Thurs). Buy one suit at full price, get another for 90,000 won. Full price suits start at 290,000, and even the low-price suits are great. You can see the store directions. If you are serious about getting a very nice suit (NOT Ajosshi style), you need to get a Korean to interpret this for you, and just go there on Thursday. I can't stress how much I love this place. I get comments on my suits nearly EVERY time I wear them.

Apkujeong Branch Directions: Phone, 542-2264 (company-owned store) Apkujeong Dosan Park, Next to Cinecity Movie Theater Location) Valet parking available

These are NOT the cheap Ajosshi Itaewon suits they hawk from the street. These styles are the latest:

So I picked up my suits today at Hahn's, and they look and feel great - no comparison to other Itaewon suits I've owned.

I got the lowdown, too, from Mr. Hahn. Apparently most (if not all) the other tailors in the area contract their sewing out to the same 2-3 factories (sweatshops), while Hahn's has their own space (behind Suji's, as I mentioned, I saw it myself).

I inspected my suits carefully in comparison to other Itaewon suits I have in my closet: the stitching is clearly more detailed, the collar is felted, and the lining includes far more little touches.

Again, I'm no expert, but I'm starting to learn a little something something, at least, and the extra greens I paid at Hahn's translate into noticeably higher quality, workmanship, and fit.

I went ahead and ordered some shirts as well. I don't expect much (I've been repeatedly informed there are no expert shirtmakers in Korea), but the price is good and my arms are too long for 105s off the rack.

Another Bluenoser, eh? Good to have you on board, eh!

Take care, and do not let my generally negative-sounding opinions of your neck-of-the-woods lead you think that posters like me are bad people, eh.

P.M. me, eh, and we'll go for a cold one or three in my favourite tavern near South Post.

A bunch of NEW custom tailors are spring up in Shinchon, Yeoido and other places, and they're all running specials. I've had a few shirts made at this one Yeido location and it's about the same I could get in Itaewon, only cheaper but with domestic fabric.

I've gone to Hamilton Shirt in Itaewon several times and to one or two other shirt stores. I've been satisfied with all of them. I have yet to have a suit made because I'm gonna wait until I finally visit Italy to have my Don Corleone masterpiece made for hopefully around 2,000 euro.
