I'm in the market for a 250 or 300 Gig portable mini hard drive. I'm thinking about a 3.5 inch one for about 120,000won.

I want to purchase it through a Korean Online Shopping Site.

www.auction.co.kr
www.gmarket.co.kr

My co-teacher is checking out prices for me, but could any of you recommend a model for me?

A 3.5" HD with an external exclosure? They do make smaller hard drives (2.5", 1.8"), but these cost much more.

A 200GB notebook (2.5") drive is more than double a regular 3.5", but for example, an 80GB/60GB 2.5" drive is about the same as a 3.5". They are nice and tiny. A 3.5" with enclosure is big and bulky, plus it needs a power cord. I have an 80GB 2.5" I bought for 70,000 and it's about slim and small and runs on USB power.

They are perfect if you want a truly portable, convenient drive.

Hi Demophobe,

Yeah that is a nice size. Do they do them larger than 80GB?
I wouldn't mind one.

Hi Ken...

Yes, there is a whole page of 2.5" drives here. They are quite simply notebook hard drives which one can put into any number of 2.5" enclosures.

Spliff mentioned a "Cutie", but inside will be a Fujitsu or Samsung hard drive. They can be easily swapped out, replaced, etc...

I recommend buying the hard drive separately, then buying an enclosure. The enclosure should be checked for nice machining; the hole for the USB cable nicely made, etc. There are some real butcher jobs out there.

I just picked up another for my wife. An 80GB Samsung drive with a Philips case. The case was very nicely made and came with a leather pouch, USB cable and a 2 port hub. It was 12,000 and the hard drive about 70,000.

Scroll through these pages as well (a bit deeper into Spliff's link)...there are a number of pre-assembled models here. Don't be worried...assembling the enclosure and drive is truly a cakewalk. Takes about 2 minutes, and there is only one way it all goes together. Very low-tech! Wink

I am also looking to get a external/portable hard drive. I currently have the Western Digital 80gb passport drive, which I take it everywhere. I just plug it into any computer and it immediately picks it up.

I was looking to getting around 250gb. I was wondering if I buy the hard drive and the case seperately, do I need to install some sort of software on my computer or other computers? Does it work as a plug and play? I will not be running any programs on it, but just storing music, movies, and other files.

Thanks in advance.

Found this "100GB USB 2 SUPER SLIM EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE HDD 100 GB" drive on Ebay. Right now it's $.99 + $16.49 shipping. Then mom would ship it here for about $8. Is something wrong with this drive? Does it look like just a case?

or is this one better? It would ship directly for $33.80.

Erm...frankly, I wouldn't do it. They aren't a lot new and you get a warranty and service. $100 will get you a 100GB 2.5". Then again, I just don't like buying used computer stuff. Yeah, with tech, it either works or it doesn't; not like buying a used car, but still.

Did you buy them off the website you linked to before?
If so, could you please post links to the drive and case you got for your wife? Thanks!

Demo, were you answering my post? They both say they are new drives. I wouldn't buy used computer stuff either. I was questioning the brands, specs and/or the sellers. Are these different from what you bought for your wife? If you still think buying either of these is a bad idea, I'll defer to your judgement. I don't know much about hardware.

A co-worker bought one that shipped from China and he is having difficulty saving FAT32 files to it. I want to avoid problems instead of trying to correct them.

I'm going to use it to store photos and infrequently played mp3s. Saving 10,000 to 20,000 isn't a big deal, but 40,000 or 50,000 is.

Sorry if I was unclear. I didn't even check the make or model...I wouldn't buy anything from Ebay that was claimed as new.

For The Skirt....a Samsung 80GB 2.5" drive and a Philips USB case/housing for it. These can be bought anywhere and cheaply. The 2.5s are notebook hard drives. I am not sure, but as you move up in hard disk size, one may need external power. The beauty right now is they run off USB power.

Fujitsu or Samsung...they seem to be the drives of choice for this format. I have a Fujitsu.

The linked site would be fine for buying these items...they are pretty standard fare these days.

The enclosure I bought was Philips for no other reason than the machining was nice and smooth, it included a USB cable and leather case as well.

I want to buy a new mini HDD, 2.5 100g seagate. How important is it to get a SATA one, and does speed really matter much 5400 - 7200?

The case I believe I'll get, unless anyone has a better suggestion is...
