What's the standard time to wait to do a visa run?

Americans have to do it in a month because we only get 30-day tourist visas.

You want to stay on top of your wongjangnim to get it done. The sooner you go the sooner your real contract starts, the sooner you can get out of it and the sooner you can look around for a better opportunity/get a nice raise. Sooner is better than later for *us*, and that is why you'll have to be a pain. Ask them everyday. They love that.

Unless "we" make the effort to get a C-3, not that I would advocate anyone working on a tourist visa. Rolling Eyes

Some directors are just lazy and don't process it quickly, all the while not caring whether you get caught or not.

Some delay b/c they want to send you to Japan on a holiday (twice directors have tried that to me).

But what they don't remember/realise is the the consulate is closed on Korean holidays and weekends (and Japanese holidays too!).

You need 2 business days (an overnight trip) to complete a visa run in Japan.

In the old days when we could do it in a day you could get by on about US$100.
Now that you need an overnight stay you will need about US$200 + your air/ferry fare to complete the task. (200k won - changed to yen in Korea or 20,000 yen).
You can squeeze by on about $150 but why would you want to? Personally I do not think meals and decent sleeping arrangements are optional. It is a business trip. Your employer should treat it as such and not expect you to skip meals or sleep in a coffin (capsule room).

Back to the OP.

IF you have to make a visa run it should be done at the soonest possible opportunity (ideally within a week or so of your arrival in korea).
Your status makes it illegal for you to work until you do and the processing time currently is only 5 days for a visa confirmation number.

Ride your boss to get it done ASAP or get paid and leave. He has no hold on you without a visa run.

Delays in your visa run are not a good sign and do not bode well for the future (expecially in a hakwon). You can probably expect other problems with non compliance in regards to Korean laws or your contract.

This past week immigration has been slow. It has taken 7 or 8 business days to process the numbers.

As other posters have said, do not teach until you have your visa.

They're open on some holidays. The 1st school tried to send me on school summer holiday, so it would have been open.

The 2nd time, it was some minor holiday. I forgot which one. Maybe children's day? I forget exactly.

They are NOT open on a holiday. Summer holidays are not RED days they are just days when the kids are not in school. Holidays are usually (in this context) considered to be national holidays

AND

ALL consulates are closed on their own NATIONAL holidays and usually (but not always) on the host countries National holidays as well.

We can get a 60-day extension after the first 30-day visa, for a total of 90 days on a tourist visa.

Don't wait for this. You shouldn't have to live in fear of immigration.

Not to be picky, since ttompatz is usually straight on, but W200,000 is around Y25,000.
