i was thinking of heading to japan and discovered that most phones do not work out there, expect for 3G which may then cause one to incurr exorbitant charges.
i am now thinking of heading to korea instead. is it the same deal with phones there? which phones if any could i buy in thailand that would work both in korea and back in the uk, pas-as-you-go? |

You are deciding the country to go to based on the cell phone? Isn't it just easier to buy a phone when you get there to work & live?
To answer your question: Nada. Only phones made for Korean market work in Korea and they do not work anywhere else. You can buy some phones in Korea that also support GSM so when you go back to your home country it would work if you use GSM there.
Or get Iridium - works everywhere
And you know - In Japan cell phone is dirt cheap to buy. Dunno why would that be an obstacle. |

no, im not choosing my destination based on where i can buy a suitable cell phone (although i did phrase it in such a way).
so a GSM phone from korea will work back home. would a Sony Ericcson W880i from thailand (also 3G) work in korea? |

Only if you have global roaming and are willing to pay the related costs.
You cannot sign up to a Korean domestic cell phone service with a foreign phone.
A phone for domestic use in Korea will NOT work back home (where ever home is). |
