All right, so my "entertainment computer" (a cheapo WinXP box I bought 2 years ago for the sole purpose of downloading television shows and playing on my tv through S-video output) has now choked.
It won't fully start up half the time and sometimes acts like I've interrupted the Windows installation process, and wants me to provide the disks... but since it came with the "preinstalled" windows (legal? prolly not) from the little shop around the corner where I bought it, I have no such disks.
Since both Azereus and VLC media player have linux versions, and I can use Firefix as well, I think, I might as well take the plunge and go with a Linux OS. I've thought about trying it for a while - and I might as well start on a box that I don't care about that much, right?
So, I've seen ubuntu mentioned here and there - is that a good place to start? Anyone done anything similar with Linux? Any suggestions for me? |

Get Linux Mint. Its a distro based off of Ubuntu. Install is simple. you download it, burn it to a CD, and then pop the CD in to your computer.
Try that out. |

Search for Linux Live Cd or Linux Live DVD
DL them burn them and try them
I have used Ubuntu and Mepis. Found Mepis to behave better than ubuntu but needed more tweaking. Mepis came with codecs etc already installed.
I DL Science Linux Live DVD last week to play with. Don't think it can be installed but it's based on SUSE.
There is an Ubuntu live DVD if you search for it as well with a huge amount of utilities on it. |

"Ubuntu is a strong desktop distro, but it falls short for some users in a few areas. Where are the multimedia codecs and DVD support, and what's with all the brown, for heaven's sake? If you'd like multimedia support with a minty fresh theme, try Linux Mint 2.2, an Ubuntu-based distro that throws in support for Flash 9, Windows Media Format, DVDs, MP3s, and troublesome wireless cards." |

I'll look into Mint.
There is also KUbuntu as well if you want to use the KD-desktop. |

If you want to use ubuntu with codecs and stuff get automatix. It's an installer program. You click on what you want and it installs it, takes a long time to install everything though! |

I was just wondering how these linux OSs handle hardware drivers, Video card, wireless network, routers and USB devices?
Should I get these drivers from the various manufacturers before I instll the OS.

I've got Ubuntu on a disk next to me. Trouble is, when I install it, I get full disk warnings. I've got my system on a partition which doesn't seem to be big enough. anyone know how much space Ubuntu needs to install alongside windoze? |

It's fine to install alongside windows.
Use Acronis disk editor to change the partition size and make an EXT2 and a linux swap file.

I DL Suse live 10.2 yesterday and had a play with that. Found it of a faff to use but it has a good community. |

1. Can I change the partition size "live" i.e. without reformatting? Sounds too good to be true.
2. Could you translation everything after "size" into English for me
