The laptop I use at work is crap...256mb ram and 1.19ghz.
WHat kind of specs should I expect if I spend 500,000W? Thanks |

You won't find much new at that price. You just missed a special on Haier laptops at that price, but it was a short-term special deal I read about after-the-fact. Haier is a Chinese brand which is having difficulty penetrating the Korean market.
If memory serves, the specs for that were Celeron 1.6 and 512k Ram.
Honestly, that will run XP just fine if you double the Ram to 1 gig. I used to own a Celeron 1.5 with 1 gig of Ram, and was even able to do video editing. Plenty of speed for web surfing and office tasks as well.
Oh, after checking, I see you can buy a Haysee Anynote brand laptop with a core duo for about 670,000 won, or go with even cheaper. Steer clear of the C7 model (via chip):

If you want to get closer to 500,000 won, then for 514,000 won, you can get the Hasee Anynote with a Celeron 1.6. I'd up the ram on anything you buy to 1 gig though -- makes a massive difference! Also, be sure it has wifi... this one says "option" so I'm not sure it's included -- OH WAIT... NO WINDOWS!:

Are we talking new? 600-700 is pretty much the absolute low-end of laptops. Depending on how old your laptop is,a new one in that range might be slightly better than what you have now, but will be obsolete very quickly. If you want a laptop that you will be able to call "decent" for a couple years, you'll have to pay at least double that. |

You can get a decent dual-core laptop for 700,000, but you'll end up spending 800,000 to add Ram anyway. And with this wonderful new Vista hell microsuck has created, you need 2 gigs. |

I'm not looking for anything top end, just something reliable for my job. I'm not kidding, the one provided by my school takes like 10-15 minutes for the damn thing to boot up and 5 minutes to shut down. It's a pain to work on anything because of the lack of ram.
If anyone is selling one that would allow me to work with powerpoint, word, internet, and basic office stuff, please let me know.
Do you think I could just upgrade the RAM of the school computer and increase the performance? I thought that ram plays a bigger part in the computer's speed than the processer. |

YES.
Upgrade your ram to 1 gig total.
You will notice a very big difference.
I am sure that, and a fresh reinstall of Windows would be all that you need.
512k of ram isn't considered good to run XP. 256 is barely workable.
Spend 65,000 or so that it costs to upgrade, and just do it. Take the notebook to Youngsan or technomart and buy some ram for it. They can install it right there.
You will notice a massive difference in speed all-around. Even upgrading by adding another 512 to the 256 already in there (768 totall) will be a huge difference.
For what you're doing with it, I suggest this is your best/easiest/cheapest solution. |

It's not gonna be ram that's the problem. It's gonna be the fact that it's a Korean school computer and it's loaded down with spyware and viruses with a hard drive that's never been defragmented. Run a good virus program in safe mode, run adaware, and defragment the beast. |
