I've just started teaching a class of 4 5 or 6 year old children. They can barely speak Korean, much less English. One of their mothers also told me that her daughter has been learning English for 3 years already (!!!). That is half her life learning English formally since she could barely talk.

Uh... what do I teach them?

I have no experience with kids this young. I can't even remember what *I* was learning at their age. I'm pretty sure I couldn't read yet. I'm thinking I should just talk continuously to them until they start talking back to me. That's what my parents did, after all.

Is this a kindergarden or a public school or what?

I guess they haven't given you any guidelines at all. Teach them songs
repeat repeat repeat....Do "head and shoulders "that will get them moving and learning body parts all in one shot.

Its a private class of 3 students at a home. I'm doing it out of the kindness of my heart, of course.

He'll probably respons soon with a list of posts, but in case he doesn't, search for all of Tomato's posts. Great resources for kindy.

Do a lot of TPR, a lot of songs, and a lot of repetition. Since you're doing this informally in someone's home, you have a ton of options. See what toys the kids have and be creative.

get one of those little balls with the suction cups.. hard to find but if u use it and draw targets with words and ask them to say words before you give them the ball those kids will be reciting hamlet trust me.

There is nothing you can taeach them you are a baby sitter.

That's okay. Teach them English anyway.
If you hold up three fingers, they probably can't give you a prompt answer in either language, but teach them the English numbers anyway.

I have only one memory: it was a unit on birds. The teacher went around the room, asking each child what his or her favorite bird was. This put me in a pickle because I didn't know ANY of them. The child right before me said "the blue jay," so I thought maybe jays come in every color. So I said "the purple jay."

Teach the kids to read English anyway.
There are some good ways to teach kindergarten kids to read and write.

Incidentally, most Korean kids can read Korean like crazy by the time they enter first grade.

No, that's probably a better way to teach adults.
Kindergarten kids have to be continuously doing something.

Their mother is in the next room. She doesn't need me to baby sit them.
