I have some old Lonely Planet books. I want to make a first time trip to one of these countries. One of my guides is about 7 years old.
Do you think it's worth paying $40 again to get the latest edition? I suppose prices to exhibitions and hotels will be different, but the general information will be the same.
Also, I rarely end up staying at the hotels listed in the book. I usually just choose a place when I get to the destination. |

It depends on the country. Stuff in Europe seems to stay the same, year to year.
Howver, in a lot of third world countries, restaurants close, routes change, military governments come in adn screw everythign up, hotels close. I think if you are going to a third world (or even second world like Korea) its worth it to buy the new one.
When I moved to Argentina, I had the lastes edition of Lonely PLanet ( I think one year old). Still half the restuarants in there no longer existed, a lot o the bus routes had changed, and some of the hostels. With the economic problems and general poverty a lot of businesses were failing and changing every 6 months. It was quite annoying. |

| Just use the old ones, it adds to the adventure. Plus, some of the best places you discover aren't listed in the guidebooks. |
