I wanna plan trip to Mongolia this August, was curious if anyone had been there before and knew the basics? Ill be going alone but i was wondering:
Im an American, do I need a Visa?

how did you get around?
what is the feasability of taking a camel/horse trek through the Gobi? or is that just a fantasy?
What are some other things to see and do?

You can buy an English version of Lonely Planet Mongolia at 2 of the big bookstores in central Seoul. I already have mine & plan on going in May.
I'm also going to Irkutsk & Beijing. I read that camel treks are possible but take a tent & insect repellent, & avoid the blowtorched marmot! (it's a bubonic plague vector). |

I went in 2005.
Costs are very cheap, especially outside of Ulaan Bataar.
Rooms could be had for under $10 Canadian. 1 week is barely enough for a trek, by camel or horse, so you better plan tight !!!
I agree with the bubonic plague...Be careful with what you eat there, I stuck to restuarants named in the Lonely Planet Guide. Never failed me in India, Korea, Japan, but was waaay out of date (and so useless) in China.
Make local friends in Mongolia and your stay will be better !
Good Luck |
