Anyone on this forum have any scuttlebutt on Woosong University and its Language Institute, or the EPIK program?
What about Hanshin University or Chungnam University? Any dirt on them?
Tanks, bruddah. |

No info on those particular jobs, but you are talking about the best part of a good city to be in--Daejon/Taejon. |

Woosong is like a hagwon - in terms of pay and workload... not really university at all.
They have many English teachers there (over 100 the last time I was told)...
I got a job there, not at the language institute but a different department, which I turned down in the end, because they were going to pay me hagwon teacher's salary and I would be required to stay at my office 9-5, daily, even if I have no class!!!
Well... sorry, just aint worth it. Besides, my daughter was just 10 months at the time, I didn't want to leave her with some complete stranger for that long every day when I didn't need the money. |

Chungnam University is a National University, so the work hours are better but the pay and benefits are pretty much the same as everywhere else.
It's a good University, though. I know a few people who teach there... they are not thrilled with it but they are not exactly complaining either. |

Just note that there is a huge difference between uni jobs and unigwan jobs - hogwans attached to some university. If you don't want to teach kids or a motely array of adult customers be sure to specify that you want a job teaching only undergraduates.
EPIK has been thoroughly discussed here and is a bit of a crapshoot. You're most likely to be placed in a large middle school where you see 500-1,200 kids a week, in a location that may be far from ideal and won't be in Seoul. |

This can be a source of confusion in conversations.
I've had people tell me, "It's not that hard to get a teaching job at a university - I know lots of people teaching at a university."
But what some (many) people fail to see is that there is a difference between being: (1) a full-time faculty member in a university department and (2) working in a university hogwan/buxiban/eikaiwa.
There are big differences in terms of benefits (not necessarily pay) such as paid leave, yearly bonuses, admin support, private office/work space, research grants and number of class hours per week. So these positions are completely different. |

if you wanna crap on EPIK, why not just send an email to the EPIK coordinator? She gives her email to all applicants. There is no conspiracy with EPIK. Incompetence is debatable; based on cultural differences.
I think EPIK is a great program that is helping Korea to further the English education of its youth. What about KORETA... before you slam EPIK, look into the history of EFL in Korea.

Not quite THAT bad. About 50 teachers. Your workload depends. Some teach corporate. Some middle/high. Some elementary. Some institute. Some uni. Workload is between 15-18 hours a week.
Course, it depends, also, if you are working for the university or for the language center. The few who work in the uni departments have a pretty good deal, I hear. |
