Like many posters here I guess I first used Daves to find a job, research schools (I used several sites for this) and get a bit of info on life in SK.
Now I find myself reading Dave's and posting on a regular basis. In SK there was some sense in this as I got home late evening from my job (too late to go out) and looked at Dave's in between TV, MSN chats etc. I also suffered from insomnia so would spend a lot of the night in front of the computer screen.
After leaving Korea I was without a PC for a couple of months and forgot the ole ESL cafe. Now I work in my office and during quiet times (quite alot as my partner does all the work ) I read Daves daily.
If anyone asked me to explain the appeal of reading the same old topics and the predictable rants of the same old posters I really would be stuck for words.
As many people seem to post on Dave's daily you must be in the same situation. Just why does it suck us in??? |

I average 11 hours a day at my school. Around 3.5 of those hours are spent teaching, 2-3 hours sleeping, 0.5 hours eating and the rest spent on random time wasting activities (which includes Dave's). Inexplicably, I still feel tired after coming home. |

Because everyone wants to get slammed by numerous people for posting a question or their opinion. |

Because we're all desperate for anything in English that doesn't involve getting drunk with people we don't honestly like, or watching Starship Troopers for the thousandth time? |

Dave's is fun, but it was funner when I was in Korea. I don't find it that addictive. I think if I complained a lot with just enough belligerance to hide the fact that I was complaining, it would be more addictive. |

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking Dave's is somehow unique.
Trust me, Muffin, people were certainly addicted to message boards long before Dave's came about. I know I have been. I've been a message board geek since around 1992, before people even knew what email was. |

It's so much fun to see how wildly varied intelligence as well as mood is demonstrated here. |

I am aware that Dave's is not unique, it's just that I personally didn't find the other boards I looked at so appealing. But if you want to extend, you could try and explain the appeal of message boards in general.
Is it because we like to feel our opinions are heard? Perhaps with Dave's it is the dichotomy that exists: the kindness and the spite, the humour and the pathos etc. People find conflict entertaining perhaps that is what lures us back.... |
