Dear All~

Here's to hope that the vast social construct of knowledge represented here on Dave's Cafe will some how point me toward a path of solutions for my driving debacle.

1> My USA license has expired

2> I've been in Korea for 3 years & have had a KOREAN drivers license for 2 years (obtained prior to USA DL expiration)

3> I am going back to the states this summer for a super sun soaked blast package of fun frills & thrills

4> This super summer package hinges on my mobility, IE rental car

5> The rental agency will accept the KDL only if I have an international driver's license to go with it.

6> International DL issued in the USA are not valid for use in the USA.

7> Renewing my US DL **sounds** like a good idea, but isn't, here's why:
a) I dont have a physical address (only a PO box)
b) My parents are deceased & siblings unstable so using their
physical addesses isn't a good idea because...
c) in addition to a phycial address, because of the expiration I also
have to show utlity bills in my name with that same physical
address. A blockbuster rental card wont do it.
d) getting a utility bill in your own name when your name isn't on
lease and your not in the country let alone the state isnt an
option
e) lots of potential for credit issues later

8> If I were *moving* back to the states, the situation would be different, but I'm only visiting.

9> I dont want to waste time dealing with this as I'm supposed to be living it up ~ just want to get busy with the party

10> My first US stop isn't in my home state, this complicate things further

All this could just go away if I could get an IDL issued in Korea for my Korean DL.

Any suggestions~???

If you are on an F-series visa then you can get a Korean IDL without problem.

If you are on an E2 visa you MUST show residence for more than 3 full years to get an IDL.

If you qualify, pop into a licence center and get your IDL. Take a korean speaker with you.
