I'm a 41 year old transvestite from Birmingham, UK. As a man I have accepted that I am different and feel comfortable dressed as a woman in my home country. My question is this.............will I have any problems in Korea as an English teacher where at school I will (obviously) wear the attire of a male teacher and will there be any issues to deal with going out socially dressed as a woman?

There is a transvestite show in Itaewon (Korean performers), but it's not really a cross-dressing or transvestite bar. I think if your co-workers do not know about your cross-dressing, then there will be no problem. I am not sure how effiminate you are, but even if you are more woman-like in your behavior and characteristics, most Korean employers will just chalk it up to you being a weird foreigner, not to cross-dressing or sexual orientation (I am not assuming you are gay).

I have heard, though I have never seen one, that there are also occassional cross-dressing shows in Itaewon for which foreigners perform. I dare say that if you are not actually performing in a show, but are simply going out in women's clothes (and if your appearance is rather masculine), you will experience some uncomfortable situations.

Peace

Your user name is Korean but you've never been here before?

Ok.

Well, you should be just fine. Hell, many Korean men dress and act like women all the time.

My only suggestion is to stick to Seoul. In a small town foreigners are noticed so much more, adn there is the slight chance you would be recognized. You'll be fine out in public, but I wouldn't let any Korean co-workers know. (Or crazy waygooks who might use it against you. There are crazy ones here and when they go off the handle, they go OFF the handle). Good luck in your job hunt!

I'm pretty sure I saw you on a street corner in Itaewon last evening.

Me? Busted. It's those damn falafels at Pharoahs. They're scrumptious. I actually came all the way out to Itaewon just for the evening (from out of town) to have dinner with a friend.

Unless you're talking about the Soju Hoju, in which case I can testify that the hill was quite bereft, unless he was under deep deep cover as a delivery-guy.

No, I was the third man. Too much competition on that corner.
