Sorry, I don't have an on-line article to link to yet, but I noticed a small article featuring the Universal Studios logo on the front page of JoongAng Daily insert of the International Herald Tribune (weekend edition...)

I'll just type out the whole thing -

Coming soon:
new theme park

By Moon So-young

Korea may soon get its own Universal Studios theme park, the company's second in Asia. Thomas L. Williams, chairman and chief executive of Universal Parks & Resorts, an arm of the film company, will visit Korea to hold a press briefing on Tuesday about the plan, PR One, a Korean public relations agency, said yesterday on behalf of the company.

Mr. Williams will unveil a proposed site for the theme park, probably in Ansan, Gyeonggi province, during the briefing, Yonhap reported. PR One said Universal is still looking at several possible sites.

PR One also said Mr. Williams has asked for meetings with senior government officials to discuss the investment plan.

The Finance Ministry's Free Economic Zone Planning Office said its officials had not received any requests from Mr. Williams.

In 2004, the Incheon free economic zone had initial talks with Universal to attract an amusement park but the talks ended with no deal.

Universal operates theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles of the United States and Osaka, Japan.

It'll be interesting to see how this develops - there's sure to be many hurdles and some strong opposition in some quarters...

Confused Sure, pick a small 3D community over an hour away from 15 million people. It'll go belly up in a couple of years.

For two years I lived practically across the street from Universal Studios in Orlando (most everyone at my apartment complex worked for either them or Disney...)

They've got some classic attractions - like "King Kong", "ET", "Back to the Future", "Jaws", "Ghostbusters", and many other movie themes ...

Their second theme park in Orlando was mostly all roller-coaster type rides, which Korea has a lot of (from what I gather...)

Universal Studios has also regularly been the production site of pro wrestling shows - and reportedly both WWE and TNA are looking to expand to Asia...
