Since Orwell had already been brought up today, I though I would post this.
Quote:

All children could face compulsory checks to discover if they are at risk of turning into criminals, the Prime Minister announced today.

The controversial proposal came as part of a wide-ranging review of crime and security policy published by 10 Downing Street.

It said the checks could take place at existing important stages in a child's life, such as the move from primary to secondary school.

The Government's plan to prevent crime said: "Establish universal checks throughout a child's development to help service providers to identify those most at risk of offending.

"These checks should piggyback on existing contact points such as the transition to secondary schools."

The document did not outline at what age the checks should begin, nor did it detail whether police or probation officers would be involved in the process.

Cool! Pre-crime accusations prove enough ...

Anyone see the Tom Cruise / Spielberg movie "MINORITY REPORT".

Now if only Tony Blair Inc. could find all those bad criminals Rolling Eyes

You're bang on re: the technology. The truth would likely be a little too much for most enough to "process".

Here's a question: WHERE do thoughts originate? What is their TRUE source?

Are we ( EGO ) merely the sum of our "thoughts"?

What of choice? Free-will? Decision making? e.g. whether to choose, reject, or ignore?

I've been waiting for something like this for years. It's a long time overdue.

So have the people who are currently running our country.

The only peaceful use out of this would be to hook it up to your wife so you could actually understand what she's thinking.

Wife: thinks about ice cream

husband says: I'm going to the store to get ice cream

Oh? Please do elaborate. Is this what necessitates the wearing of aluminum foil hats? It's a bit too paranoid to think there are men in vans reading our minds if the simplest questions, such as the ones you pose, are unanswerable.

As to the UK program for compulsory checks for criminal behaviour, I think there's a postive aspect to it. As long as these checks are performed as a consistent, and long term maintenance of social welfare, to ensure that no child is in need, or in a detrimental situation, then it's got to be a good thing.

Still, this would mean there would have to be a lot of resources devoted to follow through to get any benefit from the checks. I hear from conversations with social workers at home, that they're already well aware of at risk children, but are very limited in what they can do for them.

It's only going to slip into an Orwellian nightmare if they are conducted as a search for criminals, with all the negative connotations for those tested.
The real question is what will the government do with the information?

Are the budding crims going to be taken out of class for chats with counsellers? Get tours of the local prison system? Have their eyelids held open and shown clockwork orange montages in concert with electric shock therapy?
