What's S.K. like in the summer for festivals/beach parties etc?

I refer specifically to those that are more recreational rather than cultural, you know: bonfires, fireworks maybe, chilled grooves, shape-makers, DIY mini-bars, flares (the kind you stick in the ground, not the kind you slide your legs through)...

I'd like to think that there's a few of you out there that have seen the sun rise through the foggy haze of a half empty Tequila bottle.

^LOL

That'll be 'Korean Myth' # 357 shattered then.

Oh well. I suppose I won't need to pack my Homer style man-dress after all.

There are PLENTY of such in South Korea in the summer. Trust me. Few expats have spent as many summer weekends on Korean beaches as I have.

Koreans like to have fireworks and concerts and drunkfests and relaxation on local beaches. It's really a nice environment for chillin' on a hot summer's night. Safe too. Bring a tent, enjoy the warm waters, and see incredible sunrises.

I've enjoyed east coast all-nighters at Hwaijinpo beach and Gyeongpodae beach, though the former had many of the uptight-yuppie-Seoulite crowd and the latter was more family, teen, college oriented, a bit touristy like Jeju's Hyeopjae beach, everything shutting down by 1 or 2. The south coast, however, has lots of people who know how to have fun all night long, relaxing, celebrating, getting drunk, and just chillin'. Myeongsashimni beach on Shinjido now can be reached by a bridge from Wando. I went there several times when a short ferry was needed, once with the Mokpo Symphony Orchestra playing on the beach in the early evening, followed by individual performers for a few hours, and was the perfect environ for me to sit and drink with a Korean I'd just met who spoke Spanish from years in Uruguay, and I knew a lot of French, so we communicated in latin for half the evening, drinking and eating and laughing. This is very typical if you wanna meet and get to know some locals. They will give you your space but will equally be inviting if you give the signs (body language, smiles, eye contact, what a high-context culture relies on). If you want a younger, hipper crowd I came across several rap, hip-hop concerts at beaches, the biggest and looked-like most-fun (I didn't stick around, everyone was young twentysomething, I'm in my thirties) was in an unlikely place: Jindo Island! Down by where the landing tide happens, the so-called Moses Miracle walking on water, well, it wasn't the right night for that, but there was some sort of music festival that drew a lot of youngsters, with lots of drinking and hanging out and laughing. And of course I haven't mentioned Sangju beach on Namhae, which I have gone to often and sometimes is soooo happenin' with festivals and fun, and Geoje Island beaches, some of which are overcrowded in summertime and others are pleasantly unoccupied, but the happy medium less so, for the sort of things you describe looking for.

This summer I wanna go to some west coast beaches, and am open to suggestions.

That's what I'm talking about.

I'm also in my 30's and can appreciate your comments about avoiding the 'younger' crowds.

I'll need to PM you a little further down the road!

Nice one.

Do so.

I'll tell you more and we might meet up at a beach on some weekend. I'm always open to meeting new people, Korean or expat.
