This is our school's program:
4 months: Phonics (one a hour a day with Korean teacher)
3 months: Prebeginner (one a hour with Foreigner and then Korean)
6 months: Beginner ( same as PB for each of the following levels)
6 months: Beginner 2
6 months: Intermediate 1
6 months: Intermediate 2
6 months: Advanced
6 months: Elite
The Koreans teach them a lot of vocabulary. The students memorize ten words a night and five sentences, and are tested on it the following day. The foreigners teach the kids how to speak and write.
The advantages
1. Lots of homework, which parents love.
2. Students are exposed to a lot of vocabulary.
3. Students can start in first grade and reach elite by the time they start middle school.
The disadvantages
1. Homework. Quanity--not quality.
2. They dont retain most of the vocabulary, and the vocabulary that is introduced in foreign teacher's assigned books is too common.
3. Kids care more about memorizing Korean's teacher's words than actually using the language. |
