Do you feel at times you have more in common with a nurse at a hospice than a teacher? In a hospice the patients don't really want to be there, but it's the best of a bad lot. There's no hope. There's little you can do to give them hope. The best thing you can do is ease their pain and make their days as enjoyable as possible.

Yes, in fact, when I first got here, one of my co-FT's used a doctors office scenario to put things into perspective on how the hagwon operates as I was acting like the KT's all were my bosses and made more money than me and I was a bottom feeder. Not true I found out. He said, we are the doctors, the KT's are the nurses, the vice-director is our office manager, and the kids are our patients.

Yes, comforting the kids enough so they don't hate you is one thing, while you do get them to do some book work, reading, writing, and speaking too for it is thier schooling whcih is a balancing act in a 3 ring circus. I am seeing excellent results though in the new kindies that started one month ago. It's astounding how much and how fast they have come along in only one month, but they are getting more and more fiesty, rebelling, fighting, and playing more due to high expectations with no play times, so we will have to relax up on em' a bit and let em' play more. I am starting to focus more on discilpline, correcting bad behavior now, and so what if they start to dislike it. I am not going to let them take run of things.

I've found you really have to bust chops the first couple weeks of a new class. Let one child nominate himself as your first sacrificial victim and really shout the kid down, loading him with homework, etc. Once you've established you run the class, you can have fun.

What's your secret? it's about 20-30 classes for me. After that they start to become angels.

Yell. I start with being nice, funny. I give them the benefit of the doubt. I warn them politely a couple times. Then I write their name on the board with an X. Another X, you get them out of their chair and you start yelling in their face.

IS THIS A CLASSROOM OR A PLAYGROUND? ARE YOU HERE TO STUDY OR PLAY? WHICH IS IT? PLAY OR STUDY? I AM A TEACHER. YOU ARE A STUDENT. I AM NOT YOUR MOTHER. SIT DOWN, SHUT UP, AND STUDY HARD OR GET OUT.

Variously, you have to eject them from the class, make them stand with their hands over their heads, and load them down with home work. And god help them if they don't do their homework next class. God help them.

I kinda miss my American uni job for just that reason. It was nice being able to wash your hands of their grade and how it affected them personally. No one forced you to go to college, and thus, if you screw off in my class, you fail.
