I've been through Padang. Nice enough place, but it is just where you land. These are the places to go:
Padang
Lake Maninjau
Bukittinggi
Then long trip to:
Lake Toba
Berastagi
Bukit Lawang
Medan
Then fly out of Medan. Should take about 10 to 14 days or more. I also heard there was a nice beach south of Padang people were talking nice about.
This website discusses North Sumatra very well:

It was a nice trip. Sumatra was nice. Of course, if you've never been to Bali, that's the better place.

I agree with the previous poster, Padang is a passing through place. Nasi Padang (Padang rice), the local food style is famous all over Sumatra and it is delicious. Thanks for the memories, it has been a long time since I was there; Lake Maninjau and Bukittinggi are really wonderful places. |
